Offering constructive feedback to singers about their vocal range can be delicate. Aim for these approaches:
- Start with positive reinforcement, highlighting what they're doing well before suggesting improvements.
- Break down advice into manageable steps, focusing on one aspect of technique at a time.
- Encourage consistent practice with specific exercises tailored to their current level and goals.

What's amazing about today's young people is that they're willing to protect themselves and to let us know what is too much without giving up. Allow this positive trait to guide your training! Give a progressive protocol emphasizing progress, not perfection. Consider the idea of "going through the motion": with the easiest feel possible and the best ergonomics, proceed toward the outer limits of the vocal range. The limit will be where a pitch is strong, and then the next pitch is weak. Don't stop there! Emphasize a relaxed throat/chest and go for the next pitch. Likely, no sound at all will come out. That's ok! After a few days of this, the weak pitch becomes a strong pitch and the "no sound" pitch will become a weak pitch. Progress!

I find that educating singers on how the voice works and how to care for it is a great starting point for developing their range. Understanding the mechanics of the voice helps demystify the process, giving singers more confidence and control. When they grasp how different registers function they're better equipped to push their limits safely and effectively.
