Timing is crucial when it comes to asking for a raise. You want to catch your boss in a good mood and avoid any busy or stressful periods. In my experience, it’s best to own your career growth and development! Regardless of the company’s policy, or lack there of, I have quarterly meetings with my boss to discuss my performance, goals, and our strategy to get me there. It’s a lot easier to navigate the corporate waters when you have a guide. I typically take the start, stop, continue approach to give him a strategy he is familiar with each quarter but also actionable for me. We also use this time to discuss where I may be gaps in my resume and how was can fill them, to get me to the next level. You need an advocate to be in rooms that you are not, why not ensure they are prepped and know your desires?

3 Present your case

When you meet with your boss, start by expressing your appreciation and enthusiasm for your job and the company. Then, explain why you are asking for a raise and how much you expect. Simply saying I want more money is no longer enough. It is therefore advisable to think about a strategy that does not just include a single argument. 1. achieving agreed targets is good. However, exceeding expectations and goals is a better argument (added value created) 2. family growth or additional financial burden are good and understandable social aspects 3. especially in times of a shortage of skilled labour, it is unfortunately a daily occurrence, that you have to stand in for colleagues over a longer period of time and thus have to take on additional tasks and responsibility. Present this additional commitment, but also the burdening commitment, as a special achievement on your part for the benefit of the company.
