Don’t be afraid to use outside the box solutions for LMS! We currently are a small non-profit using Freestone, which servers our learners needs. This LMS was not originally on our radar but worked well in conjunction with our AMS. We had to step back and take a look at the larger picture as what was going to be easiest for both our learners and our staff and this was the clear winner!

As others have mentioned, Articulate 360 (storyline in particular) is the industry best for creating eLearning. Adobe captivate is similar in that you can create almost anything, but the learning curve for non-adobe or new-adobe folks can be steeper than storyline. Rise requires almost no learning to use. These are just the basic tools, there are a lot of other tools developers use to create final products: Vyond, Adobe creative suite, Voice over applications like WellSaid, Synthesia, etc. As with anything though, a tool is simply a tool. The quality of the outcome depends on the person using that tool. You need a true expert in instructional design to create an effective eLearning experience, not just a tool to build something.

You need Subject Matter Experts at multiple levels of the program, from the content itself (expert knowledge of the content) to the delivery of the content (presentation, handouts, quizzes, etc.), an online system to store the materials and video/ audio files, then a way for customers to buy it which needs to be connected to banks, plus the marketing to get sales. It sounds easy but above all - you need expertise, time and money and then repeat.

Within a course, feedback can assist with learning comprehension and synthesis of objectives, skills, and/ or processes. Post course, it's important to obtain feedback from the learners participating about their subjective experience. You also need to do follow up feedback based on numbers or KPIs to measure the true outcomes in an objective way. How you do this is entirely dependent upon the context, but surveys, focus groups and again, obtaining longer term data are essential for getting true measures of training effectiveness.

Keep videos short and engaging - break them up into pieces whenever possible, and give staff a suggestion for how to apply the learning for each thing you’re teaching.
