Imagine trying to run a marathon with your legs tied together. That's what working with too many rules feels like. Streamline those processes and give your team the freedom to make decisions. Less time wrestling with red tape means more time for brainstorming! ?
Learn early and often. Build feedback loops into everything you do. Most importantly with your customer. This isn't waiting till you have something polished to show them, this is creating an outline with some bullets, getting some feedback, building on the feedback, present back a draft for more feedback. Anytime you feel you have 'finished' something and are ready for feedback it is almost too late. This has the biggest cost in terms of wasted time and rework needed. Sometimes it may not be practical to work with your customers in this way, but it may be getting feedback from your team and people who are deep into your customers' problems. In product development, it is sketches on paper before you create a prototype etc.

Is this the type of role they are actively seeking to grow into rather than just making it a means for job security? Sell your honest product to the people, train them very well, lead with empathy, and then the team you will build will be a durable, trustworthy team that will function as a well-oiled engine.
