Understand the specific data challenges and requirements of your organization, and then identify individuals with a solid foundation in data engineering principles, strong technical skills, and a collaborative mindset. This ensures a targeted and purposeful recruitment process, laying the foundation for a successful and cohesive team.

In my opinion, there are some steps that cannot go unnoticed, such as: Understanding project requirements, Defining roles and responsibilities, Assessment of technical skills, Interpersonal skills, Knowing how to work in a team, Continuous Learning and Development, Promoting a collaborative culture, Tools and technologies, have a culture of Feedback (give and receive), Setting goals and metrics, Diversity and Inclusion, Leadership and Mentoring.

Develop a job description outlining key responsibilities, technical requirements, and desired qualifications. Prioritize effective communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills. Leverage a diverse recruitment strategy to attract candidates with varied experiences. Conduct thorough interviews and technical assessments to assess candidates' proficiency. Establish a supportive work culture that fosters continuous learning and innovation. Finally, ensure team members align with the organization's goals and have the autonomy to contribute meaningfully to data-driven initiatives.

It’s good to look for the right people with the right attitude and culture. Skills and tools can be learned and picked up respectively, but, a person with the wrong mindset will slow down progress. A clear training pathway must be defined and team members need to feel that they are allowed to grow and develop their skills with full support from managers.

Whatever gets the job done. It is certainly nice to work with tools and products that you are familiar with, but the data landscape is never going to stop changing. I personally love Python, work predominantly with AWS, and use several Open Source tools.

For instance, in projects spanning healthcare, e-commerce, and banking, we harnessed our cloud skills in Azure, AWS, and GCP for scalability and cost-efficiency. We embraced open-source. Ultimately, the strategic alignment of skills with the right tools creates a strong and adaptable data engineering team, poised for success in any scenario.

As a data engineer, I believe that leveraging an array of tools and technologies is crucial for handling diverse data facets. Tailoring solutions to match data types, volumes, speeds, and varieties is pivotal, prompting choices like relational/non-relational databases, batch/stream processing, cloud/on-premise platforms, and open-source/proprietary software. Crafting a robust team involves meticulous evaluation of each option's merits, aligning with needs and budget, and offering comprehensive training and support to empower team members effectively.

Drawing from my experience, our team excelled in both Data Monitoring and Data Governance. We crafted a robust data monitoring framework that ensured the performance, availability, and health of our data pipelines were continuously tracked. This proactive approach helped us identify and address issues promptly, enhancing data reliability. Simultaneously, we conducted a comprehensive data governance assessment of legacy data systems. This meticulous evaluation uncovered existing data governance issues. With precision and care, we applied best practices to rectify these issues and implemented a robust data governance policy. This not only ensured data integrity but also aligned our data management with industry standards.

As a data engineer, adhering to rigorous processes and practices is paramount to ensure the integrity, reliability, and efficiency of data pipelines. Embracing key methodologies like data governance, security, documentation, testing, monitoring, and DataOps is fundamental. Data governance sets the guidelines for managing data assets, while security safeguards against unauthorized access. Documentation delineates data metadata and lineage, testing verifies data accuracy, and monitoring tracks pipeline performance. Adopting DataOps principles aids in streamlining workflows. Establishing and enforcing these practices across the team and organization is crucial in building a robust data engineering team.

Literally, nothing beats a clear and well-defined document and JIRA ticket. Ensure it is reviewed and signed off by all members before work even begins. For Data Engineering teams, having a Metadata driven solution works wonders. Rather than having adhoc PRs or hack jobs into production, a metadata driven framework allows transparency, consistency, and a way for other engineers to approve PRs. Long gone are the days of config files and hardcoded variables when you can have it all in a metadata database.

From my own experience: In addition to usual practices - known from SCRUM and Kanban - it was very helpful for building a strong team: - to hold a brainstorming meeting every two weeks (after lunch) - where a certain topic was discussed and an employee prepared a short presentation, e.g. the experience with a new tool or a new method. The topic was then discussed and the next steps were clarified within the team. - In addition, there was always an open discussion, e.g. the improvement of services, ideas for new products (team roadmap) - inspired by the company roadmap or by personal experiences of the team members with their clients. Above all, participation in the team roadmap gave all team members the feeling of getting really involved

With extensive experience, I've seen the transformative power of fostering a culture of continuous learning and cross-skilling in data engineering. We prioritized training to keep the team at the forefront of industry developments. Data engineering is dynamic, and adaptation is key. Cross-skilling allowed us to leverage diverse skills. Python, PySpark, SQL, Airflow, DBT, Azure, AWS, GCP, Databricks - these were not just tools; they were the building blocks of a dynamic team. This empowered us to excel individually and collaborate effectively, creating an environment where innovation thrived. Through continuous learning and cross-skilling, we built a strong and adaptable data engineering team.

For my point of view and experience I had as a data engineer background is culture and collaboration is more important . Because in this world everyone have different way of coding and solving the problems. So if we have different type of persons in our team we can have better collaboration and understanding the way team members solving issues. We can make use of that and implement in our projects. Also everyone in the team should follow some standard and culture to have weekly discussions on complex and unique issues kind of weekly scrum.

In my perspective Brainstorming sessions should be regularly utilised. These sessions provide structured platform to openly discuss historical challenges encountered and the solutions taken which proved to be effective. This enhances the collective problem solving capabilities and also enhances efficient team performance. Cross training or peer training is another aspect that helps with team development and diversification of skillsets. It enhances the team’s resilience in handling varied challenges and fosters a culture of continuous innovation.

Nothing is better than working with people with the right mindset. I would easily choose to work with a team of fun and collaborative members over a team consisting of highly technical and knowledgable members. As long as you are all in the right mindset with a clear goal, nothing is impossible.

Start with experience. Over time you want to create a balance of skill and experience across the team; the more experienced team members helping to develop those less experienced. You should want to create a strong team for all time, and not just for a moment. When you are starting out, experience trumps juniors. You need to establish credibility early on. Keep in mind that the individuals you hire at the start will most likely not want to hang around. They'll be driven by being part of the start. Once you are established, diversify, to ensure the longevity of your team. Whatever you do, do not become overly dependent on one or two people. You'll lose the team if you place too much bias in one part of the team over all others

Ownership of data is very important. You want to avoid your team to be under fire from all side for bad quality of data and be overwhelmed by request. For this, you need to organize data in business domains and identify a sponsor that champions and own lifecycle of this domain. Ideally the sponsor is an executive or close to executive to take decision. Ownership gets more important in big corporations where accountability on data quality is usually unclear and splitted between consumers and producers of data. This relinquishes all quality complains to the middle layer, your data engineering team. Avoid this by having a sponsor who distribute and manage accountability accross consumers, producer and middle layer.

One most important thing is to hire a data architect and data engineering team should be founded along with technology team .so that data governance is maintained and all your report come from data warehouse not from source or application database.
