Even if you do not have a BS degree, the biotech field needs to many skill sets that I know people with high school degrees that work for a biotech company. In fact, one of the best mechanics for fermentation equipment that I have ever worked with barely graduated high school, was a drug addict, and turned his life around to be a fruitful member of society. His story inspires me to this day!

Networking is hands down the best way to understand what opportunities are available and to get your foot in the door. Getting your shot at a position in biotech, like any other sector, is 10x higher if you know the right people. Attend conferences and events where companies you're interested in will be. Failing that, search for events and look up the speaker list. Reach out to the people who have positions that you'd like to have and ask them how they got there. These people are busy, so always try to offer them value before asking for their time.

Even as an undergraduate student, networking with professionals helped me understand what I did NOT want to do. Because I knew, the first company I joined, DuPont, ended-up being one of the best companies I have ever worked for!

An internship is the easiest way to get into a company that you want to work for without having a referral to get in. Even if the internship isn't a perfect fit for your interests or desired career path, just get in the door of a company and get a chance to show what you can do. Once you're at that company for ~3 months, you'll know a dozen people who could serve as a referral for you to transfer into another more interesting position within the company. Getting a well-known company on your resume along with the word "Internship" will get you a second look from hiring managers familiar with that company's high employee standards. Don't be afraid to start small then make a lateral move to a more desirable job in the company.

Every now and then I get discouraged university graduates about the tough job market. The first job out of college is the most difficult, and that is why it is of UTMOS importance to have at least one internship experience while an undergrad. Unfortunately I did know of a very smart undergrad (the ones that finish the exam early and scores higher than most) that struggled big time securing a job because he did not have any internship experience.
