The major problem an employer would encounter is the employee not understanding the possible production pipelines, thats why employers expect you to have industry experience. without that and without any contacts, it will be quite a struggle to break into this industry. Having a network gives you the opportunity to show your understanding of pipelines and prove your experience in production without having any industry experience. to be fair: that's still no guarantee, but it sure helps a lot.

today, 3D print your production is most important by me. it's a better way to learn what the "fast prototyping" practical means. To explain my point of view, design an engine is cool but if we just cant produce it because it's to complex for the industry, it's not usefull. 3D print production is the next step of the industrial world (just look what's happen in the spatial industry) so challenge your designs and make it real, it's more relevant than simply show your best models made on Catia or virtualy tested on Solidworks.
