1 Listen actively

Listening is not just hearing what others say, but understanding their perspectives, emotions, and motivations. Active listening helps you to gather relevant information, identify problems and opportunities, and build trust and rapport with your stakeholders. As a Servant Leader, you should listen attentively and empathetically to your team, customers, partners, and competitors. You should also ask open-ended questions, seek feedback, and acknowledge different views. Listening will enable you to gain insights, generate ideas, and make informed decisions.

2 Empower others

Empowering others means giving them the autonomy, resources, and support to pursue their goals and contribute to the shared vision. Empowering others helps you to leverage the diverse talents, skills, and experiences of your team, and foster a culture of collaboration and innovation. As a Servant Leader, you should delegate effectively, provide coaching and mentoring, and celebrate achievements and learning . Empowering others will enable you to tap into the collective intelligence, creativity, and commitment of your team.

Attaining Servant leadership is a journey which get imbibed in your personality gradually with experience. To my experience being at leadership level is about balancing between two aspects Business Vs People. If you give preference to people, then business would compromise and when you give preference to business, people aspect is compromised. To my experience embracing empathy while serving teams is must it also gives feeling of empowerment rather a judgement you are passing as authority. To maintain right balance between business and people aspect its essential to create psychological safety, leader should move authority to information, encourage co-creation to solve problems while giving people the sense of empowerment or belongingness.

3 Think critically

Thinking critically means evaluating information, arguments, and assumptions objectively and logically. Critical thinking helps you to avoid biases, errors, and fallacies, and to challenge the status quo and conventional wisdom. As a Servant Leader, you should apply analytical and reasoning skills, test hypotheses and evidence, and seek multiple perspectives and sources. Thinking critically will enable you to identify gaps, risks, and opportunities, and to devise effective solutions and strategies.

Serving a purpose helps you to create value, motivate and engage your team, and build a positive reputation and legacy. As a Servant Leader, you should articulate and communicate your vision, demonstrate your values and ethics, and act as a role model and mentor. Serving a purpose will enable you to achieve your goals, inspire others, and make a difference.
