You want to ask for a promotion. How do you approach your boss?

Instead of demanding a promotion, consider a proactive approach. Schedule a meeting with your manager to express your interest in career advancement. Highlight your achievements and contributions that align with the desired role. Demonstrate your commitment to continuous development by expressing your willingness to take on additional challenges and learn new skills relevant to the promotion. Finally, seek your manager's guidance on what steps you can take to further qualify for the position. This approach demonstrates your initiative, value to the company, and desire for growth.

You work and produce the best. A desired boss will approach you ... you may have to change, you be offered more than a raise -- a project may come your way! You may become your own boss!

I have always found that the most successful projects are the ones that I know I have done well at teaching the underlying technology to my customers so that they take full ownership in the solution that I am implementing. I think that if they understand "Why" they will get to the "How" and if I can help that's great! Just knowing they understand how technology is impacting their business at all levels and how to actively participate in innovation with the available technology for industry.

I agree with most of the previous comments and would like to add that it's all a question of expectations and alignment with the boss. You also need to make sure it's formalized, so you can have evidence to defend your case and convince the boss to get a pay rise or promotion.

Promotion will not always come by itself. Often it is offered, but I can imagine that in some cases it helps to bring the topic on the table. I can echo the input of Min Yarzar Mon; be open about your interest in career advancement. Show your commitment also by picking up tasks and responsibilities with which you can proof you capabilities, even if it is not yet in your scope. Don't just ask the question, but also show that you are capable and really are committed to it.

I think the correct timing is very important...when things are in your direction and your bosses mood is in accepting mode. So timing is top most

Glassdoor provides excellent (job) market information in not just salary but also information about the company and culture. Definitely prepare yourself for salary compensation but also prepare yourself for the shift/change.

Be upfront and honest. Do your research and have a realistic idea of what your value is to the company. Understand the market you're working in. And most of all the worst thing anyone can ever say to you is "No".

I ask myself what unique value that I bring to the table. In addition to researching market salary information. I think if you want to be on high end of the salary range you should be able to convey the value you bring. Your differentiator.

No one deserves a promotion "just because". Let your peers, management, and business partners speak. Don't be shy to ask for recognitions or recommendations. It helps validate your value and capabilities. "Strike when the iron's hot" - - meaning - ask for the promotion after a glowing year-end performance evaluation.

Why should I present my case ? Boss should see and access. My work should be such that boss should be compelled to give promotion. Never beg.

Promotion will be there on time if someone can proof himself in last year’s with extraordinary performance which is not defined in the JD.
