You receive feedback that changes your video's direction. How do you navigate incorporating it effectively?

En règle générale, le client est en droit de demander les modifications qu'il désire, tant que ces modifications s'inscrivent toujours dans le brief de départ de la vidéo. En revanche, il est dans notre devoir d'argumenter et de défendre notre parti pris de montage si nous estimons que les modifications demandées desservent l'intérêt et le message du client. Il s'agit parfois d'un manque d'audace, parfois d'auto-censure, parfois d'une faible connaissance des tendances en audiovisuel, et il est donc primordial de faire en sorte que le client se fie à notre expertise de producteur.

As a video creator, I’ve learned that feedback is an invaluable part of the creative process. When feedback suggests a new direction for a video, it can initially feel challenging, especially if it means deviating from the original concept. However, I’ve come to embrace these moments as opportunities to refine and enhance my work. In my experience, some of the most powerful videos I’ve created came from moments when I embraced change, letting new insights shape the narrative in unexpected ways. By staying open to feedback, I ensure that my work not only meets but often exceeds the expectations of those who view it.

My perspective has been to first analyze the feedback, and then to logically assess how that feedback could be best implemented to keep the client's goal - my goal. If I see issues within those notes that would hinder the quality of the final product, I would always bring that up to the client alongside of some creative problem solving options for them to consider. Art and creativity almost always requires the process get a little messy, in the same way planting a garden requires you get your hands a bit dirty, and I believe that should be celebrated and not feared.

First of all I listen to the feedback, take notes, start to process it, and ask why are the changes good or bad for my video. Also , I will create two simple drafts, one with the new direction and another with the original and see what works best.

I would evaluate the views in line with my script. Any decision made has to reflect that because it will affect the intended outcome. At the end of it all, the production team and the client have to have an understanding of what is expected.

é muito importante saber se o feedback vem do seu público alvo ou de alguém que entenda seu público, e o seu nível de importancia, se é um problema que está atrapalhando passar uma mensagem ou se é apenas um esmero vindo de um lugar muito pessoal e particular.

Une situation en particulier est plus compliquée à gérer : lorsque plusieurs personnes issues de plusieurs services font chacun des retours sur votre production, ces retours étant parfois contradictoires les uns avec les autres. Dans ce genre de situation, n'hésitez pas à stopper le processus de post-production, et à demander à votre client de réunir ses différents collaborateurs afin de vous faire un retour groupé et cohérent. L'occasion leur sera donc donné de se mettre d'accord et d'avoir un retour global en une seule fois, plut?t que de faire et de redéfaire des modifications, évitant ainsi la multiplication des versions et un éventuel additif de jours de post-production dans la facture finale.

You need to understand the reason/idea of the changes, because not all the changes are good ideas, and a video editor needs to accept when a video can be improved.

J'ai parfois d? refaire presque intégralement une vidéo parce que le community manager et le directeur de communication avaient une vision totalement opposée de ce qu'ils voulaient dans le montage final. Demande qui n'avait pas été exprimée dans le brief de base. Le CM voulait une version orientée best-of image / clip, alors que le Dircom voulait une version avec plus de contenus interviews, plus de fond. La meilleure solution fut la plus simple : plut?t que d'essayer de faire une version commune qui n'aurait satisfait personne, nous avons finalement fait deux versions : un best-of pour le CM + une version "contenus" pour la com interne, avec 2 jours d'additifs de post-production. Tout le monde s'y est retrouvé !

I believe changes should be made as long as they don't compromise the overall story. If the integrity of the story is affected, then the changes may not be sensible. I would communicate this reasoning politely.

Production is a chain where all parties are inter-dependant and Communication is the key, in big or small teams. What matters is that everyone is on the same page : from team members to management to client. From feedback request to acknowledging them or sending final version, validating them by directors, etc. Each step is crucial.

In video production, things can change at any time for any reason. I've learned to expect them. I see the production schedule as subject to change at any time. Whenever possible, I build time for the unexpected into the production schedule. Best case scenario, you'll finish the project early. If there's a huge change in direction, you are in better position to finish the project when planned.

Every project is a learning experience. After each video, I try to step back and think about what worked and what didn't. Maybe I realized how important it is to involve the team in the feedback process earlier on, or I discovered a new editing technique that saved time. It's about growing as a filmmaker and making each project better than the last. The more I learn about collaborating and using feedback, the stronger my videos become.
