I have been working with U-nets with a encoder-decoder format where convolutional layers are used like in any feature mapping image segmentation NN but the original features are copied from the corresponding contracting layer to the resultant layer every step, which kind of looks like skipping connections and forms an 'U'. This way the spatial resolution is preserved throughout. Also this way is useful for segmentation of images with sharp boundaries.

Might be to tweake the direction here. If the focus is to do a quick exploration, I will not focus on the algorithm selection more. Actually, I will go and use off-the-shelf solutions.
