I assume standards refers to things like technical compatibility, accessibility and branding. If these standards are not met, it risks the desired performance outcomes not being achieved—and if they're not, the eLearning program cannot be considered successful. The exception, arguably, is branding. If an eLearning program helps learners achieve the desired performance outcomes, but it's off brand, then I don't see why it matters that it's off brand. I'm not saying we shouldn't aim to meet our clients' branding standards. What I am saying is the client's desired performance outcomes are the most important standard of all. So, as long as a creative idea doesn't risk that standard, or add unnecessary costs, we're safe.
