To establish trust with a new coaching client who is hesitant to open up, start by creating a safe, non-judgmental environment where they feel comfortable. Be patient and listen actively, showing empathy and understanding without pushing them to share more than they’re ready for. Build rapport by asking open-ended questions and sharing small personal experiences to create connection. Reinforce confidentiality and explain how the coaching process works, so they know what to expect. Over time, this approach helps them feel more secure and willing to open up at their own pace.

When working with a new coaching client who is hesitant to open up, establishing trust requires openness and transparency from the start. Begin by clearly explaining your coaching style, the structure of your services, and what they can expect from the process. Be open about your own experiences, sharing success stories or challenges you’ve encountered with past clients (maintaining confidentiality), which can help them relate and see the value in your approach. Let them know that trust-building is a gradual process, invite them to share their concerns or expectations openly. Creating a safe, non-judgmental environment and showing vulnerability in your own journey reassures the client that they can trust you to guide them without pressure.

Some clients may take longer to open up, and that's okay. Don't try to rush the process; respect their pace and allow the relationship to develop organically. Trust is built over time. It's important for the client to feel like they're in a safe space, where their thoughts, emotions, and experiences will be heard without criticism or judgment. Establishing this environment from the first session is key to making them feel comfortable opening up. Showing genuine empathy is essential to establishing an emotional connection. Acknowledge and validate the client's feelings, even if they don't express them openly. This will make them feel understood and respected.

In my experience, I always make them feel comfortable by chit chatting in the begining looking for some common interest to talk on and then slowly turn the conversations towards their pain points as I share my own experiences. This helps them to relate to my experiences giving them a feeling that I understand them and respect whatever they are feeling and they start to open up. In this situation patience and empathetic listening is very important. They hesitate because they were never got a ears to listen to them or they were judged on every step that's why this really help me to give the best possible solutions to my clients
