You have to answer the question "What is your experience with writing for different industries?

As a copywriter, I know that many of my colleagues value choosing one specific industry or voice to focus on, but I actually really enjoy writing for a variety of different industries. I find it to be very interesting and stimulating, and as long as you do the correct research, and ensure that you understand the voice of the brand you're writing for, it is very doable!

While it may take a lot of time and energy to learn about the subject matter, technical jargon associated, target audience, latest trends in the industry, and tone & style of the content, it's exciting to know things from different industries. It adds more dimension(s) to your perception of how things are happening! One caution with these is to take care to adhere to the NDAs [if signed with your source(s)].

Writing for different industries is an impressive accomplishment because it shows versatility and adaptability. Each industry has its own unique language, tone, and audience, so being able to effectively communicate and connect with diverse industries requires skill and expertise. It demonstrates a wide range of knowledge and the ability to tailor content specifically to the needs and preferences of different industries. For example, my first role after receiving my BA, I worked in marketing communications for a commercial real estate company. When I worked at Excellus BlueCross BlueShield, I had to learn medical language. Despite the creative skills I already had, I had to adapt to the industry I was in order to create effective content.

Many clients think that as a copywriter you have to be very familiar with their industry and the associated topics. But this is not a prerequisite. On the contrary: if I'm a layperson myself, I have the same prior knowledge as the target group. This allows me to convey the topic in an understandable way. Specialist texts are an exception.

It's also useful to understand the language and tone of voice for that industry - do as much reading within that industry as you can, not just to learn names, facts and news, but to immerse yourself in the jargon, key words and assumed levels of knowledge. You'll then write as if you already inhabit that world.

Just stay aware of possible NDA-s you or your former company signed with the clients, especially if you did ghostwriting. You might want to just name the industries and types of work you did, or ask for testimonials as stated.

I have always believed in befriending (and sometimes, if needed, chasing) subject matter experts :) Over the years, I've written for various industries from IT to FMCG, mass customisation, e-commerce and even healthcare. When it comes to creating content that really matters, content that is impactful and packed with personality, there's nothing quite like SME insights. SMEs are the ones out there, talking the talk and walking the walk with your target audience. So invite them for a Friday morning coffee and pick their brains. Nothing beats good old primary data.

Curiosity is a key trait of a good copywriter: 1. Eagerness to learn, explore, and discover new insights. 2. Willingness to ask questions, seek feedback, and improve. 3. Show interest in the industry or project you're discussing. 4. Ask about goals, challenges, audience, and expectations to better understand the project.
