Why is pre-production planning crucial for successful video production?

When I was starting out, it was easily mistaken as a pointless exercise to story board, however now it is quite essential to a seamless workflow, it also acts as an underlying road map for the client and as I can expect them to understand my vision in written words, I can help them gain prespective with a visual marker.

Having a script and storyboard is a must when it comes to production. It helps to visualise exactly what you want and how you want it. It saves a lot of time during the production stage as well, and avoids misinterpretation of the shots.

I've worked on countless projects where I've been told to capture what I can capture and I'll be given a script to edit to later, and while some amazing videos have come from that, there's a much higher level of polish and intentionality that comes from going into a shoot with a clear cut vision. It's the levels of polish that the everyday person may not fully appreciate, but it'll be noticeable. A little extra care with each projects will make your body of work astronomically better

Preproduction is probably the most important part of production. The experience producer can visualize the entire shoot and pinpoint where risks can potentially pop out, where there might be additional expenses that needs to be planned or time allocated. This is to ensure smooth sailing and proper time must be allocated in order to prep accordingly. Rushing through this step might mean compromising on other aspect later in which can become costly, and a liability.

Your location can influence the overall tone and visual appeal of your video. The chosen location should complement the storyline and enhance the visual storytelling. Think about your lighting conditions, acoustics, and accessibility. A natural setting might be ideal for conveying a sense of tranquillity, while an urban environment could enhance the dynamism and pace of the narrative. Also, think about the location's aesthetics, such as colours, textures, and architectural elements, which should align with the visual style and mood of the video.

One thing I've found very helpful in my video productions is to follow a schedule because time flies by quickly during productions and if you and your team are not on a strict schedule, you spend way more time than necessary completing tasks that require less time tan allocated. So always work with a schedule.

In tabletop we are mostly in a studio so I'm more concerned about surfaces and Background than actual location, but schedule is very helpful for both client and creative, and, it helps me navigate my time and gain critical insight during testing way before the shooting date.

Scheduling and getting your locations well before the shoot can help with timing and avoid last minute panic. The schedule will keep everyone on track, so they know exactly what they're supposed to do. Finding the right locations and getting the permits are important. Always make sure you have ample of time when applying for permission in locations.

Never under estimate the importance of Pre-Production as it's not just the planning of what kit you will be using. Pre-prod allows you to the plan the day, work to a timescale that ensures you capture all the content required to deliver a final piece that meets both your own and the clients expectations. It's about how the day will be broken down, that all content is captured in the timescale allocated so you don't run out of time, have to pay extra for overtime or worse have to add another shoot day. That all permits, permissions, travel etc has been arranged in advance so the team can focus on being creative and keep an eye on the clock to ensure they don't get lost in time and miss an important part of the story.

Pre-Production is, in my opinion, the most important step when it comes to having a successful production. Although it may feel time consuming, taking the time to create an equipment list will make sure you have everything you need. Nothing is forgotten to go on location and nothing is forgotten to leave the location once it's time to pack up. "Idiot check" is a real step and when you have a check list you can check off as equipment goes into the trailer, you're less likely to loose small pieces of equipment. Organizing your crew and the roles within the crew members will help everyone be prepared with what they need to focus on.

The equipment required for a video shoot can vary based on the project's scale, complexity, and creative goals. Equipment will include cameras, lenses, tripods, lighting kits, microphones, and audio recording devices. And accessories such as stabilisers, drones, and specialised mounts may be necessary for specific shots. You may go with a small crew of 2 people or a basic crew consisting of a director, cinematographer, sound recordist, and production assistant. Larger productions may involve additional roles like a gaffer for lighting, a grip for camera support and movement, a production designer for set aesthetics, and makeup artists or stylists for talent appearance.

Equipment and crew is one of the main differentiators between a "videographer" and a production team. A lot can be done with a little, but if there is a true benefit to realize ($$$) then the extreme value is found in hiring specialists. The projects that really deserve to stand out should be treated that way. For AB Marketing that means using Netflix-approved cameras and having a crew member for every need, which can mean a team of over a dozen on some days. Sound, grip and gaffers, camera, direction, production, and hair and makeup is just the start...

It's where creativity meets logistics. Make decisions on your story you want to tell and how you want to, tell it. Also what resources you need to do so. Pre production is your chance to fix any kinks in your, plans and ensure everything runs smooth once your on set.

The wrong cast and performance will ruin your video production. from my experience, you can have a great script, a great film crew and the top of the range film equipment but if you don't have the right cast and performance, everything becomes a big wast of time, effort and resources. The cast and performance make the video.

During pre-production, it is essential to conduct thorough rehearsals and workshops to fine-tune performances, ensuring that each member of the cast is aligned with the narrative tone and emotional nuances of the video. Don't forget to consider Post during Pre. Schedule post professionals to come in and offer their takes and expertise. Lots of headaches in post can be avoided with solid pre-production, resulting in a smoother, more efficient and cost effective process. Consider ways to involve VFX, Audio and Color departments from the start.

I think its important to consider personality, being talented is only 20% of the job, if you are difficult to work with and you're behaviour is unpleasant you likely wont get considered to work with clients multiple times, and as it is really difficult to land the clients you should consider how important it is to present a professional tone especially to those who work with you on repeated requests.

Never discount post-production. I know many people who say editing is their least favorite part of filmmaking, but it's always been my favorite. You can (and should) put everything you have into preparing and executing a shoot, but no matter what happens on shoot day, as Roger Nygard says in his wonderful book on editing titled "Cut to the Monkey," it's in the edit that the film is truly written. You can, and should, capture everything you would want to show, and even things you don't know if you'll need, and trust your editor with it because a good editor makes or breaks a project. They take the puzzle pieces you've produced and put them together into a final product. So if you're reading all this, make sure to thank your editor today.

Everything can go wrong without a plan. You miss parts by forgetting, turn up with the wrong equipment. Don’t have enough crew to achieve what was asked. If there is not clear plan in place every moving part can collapse.

In all the productions I've been a part of, whether my own independent production or a big budget TV series, there is always one thing for certain: there will always be something that goes wrong. Pre-production planning isn't about making sure everything turns out perfect. It won't. It might turn out even better, but it will be because of all the prep when you prepared a back-up plan, and back-up plans for your back-up plan. And, then being able to move swiftly though them.
