An experiencied Vendor with specific industry will be able to know the terrain, challenges, deeper understanding of industry nuances, lead to smoother collaborations, quicker problem-solving. and better grasp of industry specific needs, it's like a partner who speaks same language & understand. the same language, make the process more efficient and effective.

The most important key sucess factor is ability to understand the variables within the company and related process especially within services industry and ability to manage stakeholders communications and expectations

It all depends on risk taking abilities. With experience, risks are lower and hence success of targeted activities. if there are inhouse experience, then having experienced vendor will add overhead to the cost. It is the balance that need to be achieved after carefully evaluating the inhouse skills versus external dependencies.

In my feild of software procurement of all kind, innovation is an utmost priority as businesses have their own set of demands and they want a supplier who can manage all that, we always focus on their road map to analyze their capabilities in addition to their current offering.

When evaluating vendors, you can request for reference calls as part of the due diligence process. This helps in 3 ways - Get first-hand information of the working ways of the vendor from the reference client - Get a fair understanding of what might go wrong and include that in the discussions during bidder presentations - Being able to evaluate and score the vendors better

Selecting the right vendor is very important. For Medium and Large scale solutions, it helps to request a Product Demo or Proof of Concept from the tendering vendors for a few requirements in scope. This will show a small window into Vendors level of understanding along with the solution capabilities. Additionally, it is important to review the experience of the team that will be assigned to deliver the project. Reviewing their resumes, track record, etc. will given an indication on the experience level that will be placed on the project.

Trust is the first thing you need from your vendor. The magic bullet I use is Trust on a smaller deals and as the time progresses, entrust them with larger deals. Similarly goes with payments, ensure that your evaluate their first project and ensure you and your company are confident on their work. After sales support plays a key role and how responsive is their support and can help in crisis. You cannot write everything in a contract hence a trusted partner ( I called them partner instead of Vendor) is what you should be looking for.

Evaluating a vendor you've never used before can be challenging. But a few simple steps can provide a positive outcome. While I agree calling on references provided by the vendor is a good start you can not always expect a true picture as it's likely the reference list only includes clients pleased with the work. Try to identify a larger sampling of clients the vendor has worked for. Depending on the trade involved it's often possible to view for yourself the success or failure of a project they worked on. For example, a lot they paved....is it still looking good in 2 years or 5 years? Or a roofing job are they returning again and again? watch where you see their crews working and contact the FM for those companies for an unbias review.

For large transformation programs, other important factors are 1.POC of critical requirement with Vendor , Benchmark validations shared by Vendors and refrence calls with other customers (preferably same Industry) of similar size and complexity in terms of integrations and architecture are important points while deciding vendors 2.Vendor's Onsite presence who can work closely with business and IT communities during implemention till Go live is another important point.
