Why is developing a personal photography style important for your portfolio?

There is a whole world of us photographers out there and most of us can do a pretty good job. So the best way to stand out in a crowd is to develop your own style. Your style can come from many things like your: Lighting set up Choice of camera Using a particular lens How you arrange a scene The colour pallet you use These and more can help define your style, subconsciously you will find that you like the effect a strong backlight gives or how a long lens and it's shallow depth of feel gives you a mood you like. It takes time to find your style but once you have just push that in your portfolio or social media content and thar is what you will be known for.

From a professional point of view, developing a photography style for me is everything. Styles will inevitably grow and evolve over time, much like we do in all aspects of our lives, but ultimately our "style" and how that is presented across our current portfolios is at the heart of what gets any of us hired over someone else in that moment. A photography style is not chosen per se, but rather a combination of learned, earned and developed over time.

Photography style is the result of all your choices from the settings of the scene, to the post processing you apply. But nowadays, with all the people sharing their photos on SoMe, it tends to be more and more difficult to find a ??unique?? style for the effects applied. So, the best is to go the side way, with a non-conventional approach. Like once said : stay weird!

Having a niche is really important . It makes your personal style easy to identify . Example, if you have certain way of shooting, this easily identified even without seeing who shot the image. This can only be done by creating consistent images and having a unique style

Do a lot of work. Try a lot of things. If you're having problems getting started then try taking pictures of things you're passionate about. Do you love soccer? Try talking to some local players and doing a shoot. Love bbq? Find the neighborhood grill master or a local bbq legend and offer them a free session. Start where you are. Slowly but surely you'll find what makes you tick, and you're fingerprint will be all over it. You can use other people's images that you admire to get started, but make sure you're creating something you're passionate about, not just trying to copy a pretty picture.

Finding your personal style takes time. The more you shoot, the more you'll see what you gravitate towards. For example in my own case I started my biz shooting portraits. I love getting really clos eup with my subjects and filling the frame. I prefer portrait over landscape as far as orientation. I love my 70-200 lens and I like a more moody aesthetic. When I started photographing flowers, I noticed I was doing the same thing - filling the frame with my subject, portatif orientation and moody. As you experiment with editing as well you'll also develop a style that you prefer. Do you prefer bright and colorful, neutrals, a retro vibe? The more you experiment, the more clearly defined your style will become.

To find your own (new) style you have to know what already exists - so know and study the history of photography and art-styles. Also be open for other fields of creativity - as a photographer you can learn a lot from painting, illustration, film-making etc.

I found my style by photographing every day and constantly refining my trade. I only take shoots that I love so I’m already personally invested in the images and it shows as personal style. Personal style is developed by photographing then reviewing my images and asking what I would change, what I love, and how can I apply what I shot this time to what I shoot next.

When I started out in Product Photography, I knew a very little about the industry. However, I quickly developed a like towards minimalism, and I shot more images in this genre. Every time I shot something, I took feedbacks from my friends and made massive improvements. Also, Instagram was a great tool too as I used to get constructive criticism from that platform. Hence, getting feedbacks on your style of photography is the best way to refine it.

There are two technical aspects, that support the creation of such, 1. during the photography process and then 2. while developing/ editing the images. During the session itself, the photographer has the opportunity to use a huge range of different techniques from positioning of the subject; camera positioning, focal length; aperture and other camera settings; proximity, movement; lighting, angle, color and white balance; frame aspect ratio; and the list goes on. Ideally the style is already refined in camera as closely as possible, so that the editing process will be smooth and consistent.

If you are interested in, or have already contact to a specific sub-culture, offer your support with your work - not only your style can then be genre-defining, but if it happens that a sub culture becomes influential for mainstream, your style can be regarded as important and avant-garde.

The truth is that you already own a personal style that is uniquely your own. It is always with you whether you have a camera or not. Too often we think that that it is an acquired trait but it has been with you from the beginning. Many people think they lose it over time but the majority of them merely forget where they put it and so others try to sell it to them. They market creativity, selling false confidence in technique that merely borrows from others. They prey on your lack of confidence rather than inspiring the confidence needed in yourself and contribute to a vision that is easily predictable. Now your Art looks like Art and you perceive it’s worth by a style that was never really yours. The only real style worth owning is yours.

Quality over quantity. Your portfolio is only for your best work. So wait until it is extensive and you are proud of what you are submitting to put it out publicly. Keep changing and updating your site, making sure it functions and the layout is simple but aesthetic, so your audience is able to easily view and purchase works. Keep up with social media algorithms to reach wider audiences, enter online art competitions and look for places to exhibit to increase the recognition of your work!

Practice and learn from diverse sources of inspiration. You can find inspiration from other photographers, art, nature, culture, or your own experiences. You can also try different genres, such as portrait, landscape, macro, or abstract photography, to see what suits your interests and goals.

Collaborations with other photographers or creators can be a great way to show your style, your interpretation of a specific topic. To have different photographers showing the same model or topic can lead to very interesting and exciting results.

Don't overthink it - expect to create a lot of junk, especially at the start. Go for what feels good and right for you and follow your gut and your heart. Anyone can learn to see colors, lighting and so on - but your very own feel is what will define "your style" in the end.

I think that sometimes it's not about finding your style, it's the style that finds you. Because I think your style is already there. How you look, how you perceive the world, what frames you like even if you don't know it. I think it's more about improving it and working on it but not about searching for it because you have the style inside you. Then people will identify you by your style if it is very characteristic. Take a lot of photos and finally you will see that there is something similar in all of them. WOW! You just found your style!

My style starts at the way I photograph and conduct myself as a professional. I dress in a way that will usually blend in with the crowd, making me seem more like a “fly on the wall” than another guest. Most importantly, it’s about the way I photograph subjects. My goal is to catch that smile or laugh as people engage with each other. As a candid photographer, I want my photographs to reflect that. While I certainly capture posed subjects, I try to focus more so on candid imagery. And the posed shots I do capture I make sure will fit in with my other candid photos. I want someone seeing my photos to say “these were shot by Bryan.” Having that recognition is important, especially with long-time clients.

From a practical standpoint having your personal photo style is helpful to create a consistent portfolio, the editing becomes easier, too. Creating something you love will also make work more fun! When you have a clear style, it can be applied to any subject and your audience will still recognize it as your photography! That’s strong branding which can build stronger connections with consumers and increase your brand's success!
