A stakeholder manager (SM) is more of an art of understanding the expectations and guiding the project team to align or reset the expectations based on the constraints. SM succeeds when each stakeholder looks at him/her as their ambassador to represent their interests. Win-win thinking plays a vital role.

With perspective from the construction sector, another role also key for succes is the inclusion of a facility manager or operation manager (FM/OM) from the very inception. In an integrated project delivery method (IPD), which is fast gaining popularity for projects which transcends geographical boundaries, bringing in players from the operation phase contributes immensely to success as they bring in their experience and contributions on-board from inception, with the potential to positively impact and influence requirements, design, planning, implementation, testing and commissioning and handing-over and ofcourse the operation of such projects. It also helps in putting maintenance and operation into consideration from the inception.

We've built up several ~200FTE global delivery organisations for a several Australian clients, there are some additional lessons learned: 1) Cultural awareness training - simple things like understanding what a nod or yes means in different cultures 2) Rotating on and offshore - it's amazing how having clients and onshore team members spending 1-2 weeks offshore co-located with global teams means. 3) Respecting timezones - simple things like moving the daily scrum to 11am to allow offshore folks to participate, and show that onshore respect their work/life, and that their input matters

One thing I have come across is how to ensure that the project would meet the set objectives especially when it impacts users. Most of the projects change the state of the environment and it becomes imperative to ensure the people who are impacted due to this change or adapting to it.It becomes critical to inclued a Organisation Change Management(OCM) with effective communication for the ultimate success of the project.
