Which data governance and security services offer the most robust access control mechanisms?

A complete DG implies ensuring the quality of data and its correct access while ensuring its sensitivity. The 4 blocks must be fully coordinated: Gov, Quality, Sec & Priv. And the only way to do this at an affordable cost/effort, is through an Active Governance strategy where we automatically apply certain control & security mechanisms depending on the role assigned to the consumer user. Within the past month I have been working on setting up Role-Based Access Control (RBAC). My team and I discussed between title base versus experience/level based. However, since we are on a medium to large scale business we decided to go with Role-Based AND incorporate Super User and Standard Users.

In any organization, assigning tasks based on roles is vital. Role-Based Access Control (RBAC) sets limits for each role, ensuring access to necessary resources only. In example, a data scientist's tasks differ from a platform admin or IT manager. RBAC configures roles with specific policies for efficient and secure task execution. Our company prioritizes RBAC to enhance security and task focus. RBAC defines boundaries, improves security, and boosts productivity effectively.

Think about your organisational structure, business requirements and roles and how this can be used to design and implement data governance security using Role and/or Attribute-based access controls. It is also equally important to consider the data classification/sensitivity requirements when designing role-based controls. Start small, with a real-need/business use case to explore feasibility and application, what works, doesn't work. All cloud vendors offer similar capabilities but it also might be worth considering using vendor-agnostic assessment frameworks for data security and access controls.

When it comes to attribute-based control (ABAC) this can be looked at by data points. For example, critical data elements. What I noticed is there is a lot of red tape when it comes to Finance, Accounting, and Pricing critical data elements so its important to create security policies around this that work for ALL departments and not just the ones I listed.

It's important that data assets can have different profile access configurations, enabling the organization to limit data access to specific departments. It is crucial to perform this task early in project development to establish a strong data segregation strategy. By doing so, we enhance data security, confidentiality, and regulatory compliance. Prioritizing this task will effectively safeguard our valuable data assets.

Something to always keep in mind is security controls for your organization is not a one size fits all. Maybe only role-base security works for you OR you need a combination of multiple things. When in doubt, always work with your security/IT team and DGC to find out what works best for your company.

I just mention the contracts on data based on purpose of the analysis, time limited, in a context of privacy engineering. Nobody should have access to it default, then, depending on specific need they should request access to the data, related to a concrete business objetive and time limited.

In addition, having a robust offboarding strategy is crucial, whether an employee get a different role or leave the organisation as it ensures timely revocation of access privileges, which is often overlooked but essential for maintaining security.
