Social friction is where we see emotions running high and tempers flaring, which often leads to the conversation getting derailed. Intellectual friction is necessary for keeping the conversation on track to its desired end. This is where cognitive diversity can optimize the conversation as different perspectives, opinions, and experience levels with the subject matter can be introduced, ultimately leading to new ideas and concepts, and innovation.

Feedback on your intervention style is extremely important. Just because you think you handled it well does not mean you did. As facilitators, we can also misunderstand what someone means or that they are still on track, so rather than abruptly stopping the conversation, finding ways to ask someone to elaborate, or someone else to explain how they see it. Feedback will help you adjust accordingly, without it you will continue to repeat the same mistakes.
