True, you have to align yourself with the goals of the company. Unless you have a truly breakthrough idea which is 'way out there' and can propel the company in an entirely new direction, there isn't much room to maneuver. As an employee, you are as much answerable to stakeholders as the CEO, both in terms of resources utilized and the final outcome.

I assume the question as, “How to derive the vision for Research Projects”. From my experience handling the University Industry Research collaboration, the Vision is derived through ? The Mission(s) of the Organization ? Strategy of the Stakeholders especially the funders ? Joint Brainstorm between External and Internal researchers using LoNGPESTLE method ? Building blocks of the research impact areas These four elements brings out in setting up a effective vision for the Research projects

Not everything goes according to the plan when undertaking a research project. There are ups and downs. When developing an ELISA test, we had to try out 18 different sources of antibodies, 5 different sources of antigen and 68 combinations of antibodies to get the right mix for the assay! And then when the time came, the company decided NOT the market the product. It was a setback, but we felt confident of our work.

Timelines are important, but not THE MOST important thing in an R&D project. Many things take away your attention, and it is alright if that happens. What is important is not to lose sight of the final goal.
