There's alot but undoubtedly a few things stand out such as keeping up to date with Law by constantly engaging relevant authorities and other professionals. This can not be overemphasied, practice with the approved payroll software. Build cases and use the dummy account to check for reliability of the system. We must bare in mind that computers are a means to an end and acquinting ourselves with relevant software will enhance effectiveness and improve service delivery. Always be willing to learn. Like Jordan Peterson always say, "Talk to people like they have something they know that you don't know". It is this level of curiosity that will help us continue delivering excellent service.

as an ops person, it is very important for you to keep your taxation, payroll and labour law related knowledge up to date. You can do that by joining ops community. participating in related workshops and conferences. Reading latest news, periodicals and articles on the topic. The HR tools providers are most active lot of people in this regards. When they organise webinars, events for this you can participate and enhance your knowledge.

As a canadian payroll expery I personaly subscribe to newsletters from different government where my clients deal (CRA, RQ, Ontario and BC governments being the most pospular). I am also a member of the National Payroll Institute and I receive news from them for the other provinces.

And when they do new updates, they do provide news or announcements related to it. You can follow these announcements. This is effective way to keep your taxation related knowledge up to date.

It is very essential that you do review your policies and procedures periodically and randomly. Periodically helps you keep upto date as per norms. and random helps you in finding out any flaws in procedures or systems you follow. if you miss to do this in case of payroll and taxation, it may have very dire consequences for the organisation.

Please understand that, you are not a legal expert yourself. And no matter how many efforts you put, you might loose out on few minor things. It is advisable that you consult professional advisor to review and audit your payroll and taxation related aspects every now and then. This will give you more confidence and make sure you are always best in your job.

Please, please, please!. Stop listening to what your 2nd neighbor on the left does in his business as you don't even know if he is doing right. And if you ask a CPA or a fiscalist, make sure he has knowledge/experience in payroll related topic. Payroll is an expertise itself and is not part of any bachelor in Canada. If you don't know, don't be shy to ask an expert. It may save you from very bad future situations

Il y a deux choses que je répète souvent. La première : dans la paie, il n'y a pas de lendemain. On doit faire aujourd'hui ce qui est requis aujourd'hui et ne pas remettre à la fin de l'année. La plupart du temps, ce n'est même pas autorisé par les autorités fiscales. La deuxième: n'attendez pas de rencontrer des problèmes avec vos feuillets fiscaux en janvier pour faire appel à un expert. Surtout si vous changez de logiciel en cours d'année. Il vous en co?tera s?rement moins cher d'obtenir de l'aide pendant qu'après.
