What's your strategy for measuring success?

Measuring success provides clarity on progress, helps set goals, and allows for informed decision-making. It enables individuals and organizations to track achievements, identify areas for improvement, and evaluate the effectiveness of strategies. Ultimately, measuring success provides a benchmark for assessing whether desired outcomes are being achieved.

I think the definition of success needs to be clear prior to understanding the justification for measuring it. If the definition isn't clear, then why indeed would one measure it. The definition of success for business can be very clear, and based on financial performance, while personal success can be very different. I'm still working on it, but success for myself is fundamentally built of providing for my family, but with an underlying empathy to support growth, encourage creativity and inquisitiveness. The business value/mission/vision should connect peoples personal success with business success. Easier said than done.

You measure success for relevance, effectiveness, efficiency and impact. This means measurement help you determine whether what you consider as success is still relevant to the time, were the efforts of implementation appropriate and executed rightly, and of course the value of what your efforts contributed to reach your target

The feeling of pain from losing is twice as much as the feeling of gain from winning. I have previously linked my personal success to business success, which leads to an uncontrolled relationship with success and one that can be very difficult to manage internally. Taking this forwards, whilst results are a measure of success, I think that we should measure what we can control. Measure the performance of the process rather than the result.

For individuals, success might be measured by personal growth, happiness, or achievements. In business, metrics like revenue, profit, customer satisfaction, and market share are commonly measured. For social impact, indicators could include the number of lives improved or environmental benefits. Choose measurements aligned with your objectives to track progress effectively.

The key here is to be transparent. If you are measuring sales or revenue, it's important that your team can keep tabs on how they are being measured, rather than being kept in the dark. Short and medium-term goals can act as foundations for the long-term goals. Seasonal trends can be monitored if necessary, and input from the team on how well they think they are doing can be shared amongst others.

I say measuring success should be at periodic intervals. When measurement is consistent, comparison is more scientific and effective
