I agree, experimenting with layouts can have significant effect on your design. Exploration always yields results, when you try out different ideas that may or may not work, it opens a pathway to merge ideas to come out with a design solution that is equitable, implementable and can perform better. Exploration phase have other perks too, it also helps you brute force lots of ideas in a short time span. This freehand mode can help you throughout the project as you can come back to another idea if you find some solution is not working in testing phase, or you want to perform A/B testing.
