It's the crucial starting point of choosing your destination. By doing this, you're not just leading your team; you're taking them on an adventure they want to be a part of. They'll appreciate the clear roadmap you've provided and be more eager to join you on the journey.

I was the CEO of a trading company, and our vision was to become a leader in global trade by expanding into emerging markets. I got employees on board with this vision by clearly communicating our vision, demonstrating our commitment by actively exploring and initiating trade opportunities in emerging markets, involving employees in market research and decision-making processes, offering training programs and resources to help employees understand the nuances of emerging markets, including cultural, regulatory, and economic factors, and recognizing and rewarding employees who contribute to the company's successful expansion into emerging markets.

The vision should also be a reflection of everyone involved, acknowledging each ones own skill set. If even one team member isn’t able to participate the plan will be altered.

Pick people that align with your vision and then involve them, make them feel a part of it. Belief in the vision makes them more likely to participate and push to achieve it.

I absolutely agree with that. You also have to create a culture of engagement so there is a true sense of “team”. The team has to care about the team- success or failure of it and care if they are letting the team down. If they don’t value the opinion or feelings of each other, the work will suffer when there is no mutual respect within the team.

It's not enough to share your "why", you also have to consider theirs. Align your team by understanding how this new direction impacts them. Understand this benefit this direction has for their work and how this can open up new opportunities for growth. Set clear expectations for their deliverables and responsibilities. At times, this may require one-on-one calls or extra time to get teammates on board. There may also need to be an expectation of "disagree and commit" where teammates understand that the team may go in a direction they initially disagree with, for sake of speed and the team's overall goals. While you may not be able to get consensus, the goal is to get everyone on the same page of why you're pursuing this new direction.

It's tempting to think of vision setting as a one-and-done leadership activity. However, the constantly changing environment and introduction of new factors (ie. pandemic, work from home, macroeconomic conditions, to name a few) proves that leaders need to constantly assess and revise their vision statements to align with their team's goals. Quarterly OKR planning provides a great opportunity to revise not only tangible goals, but the team's overall direction. On top of that, continuously incorporating vision and the team's "why" into the team's weekly cadences like team retros and recognition can go a long way for motivating coworkers. Overall, it's crucial to see vision as iterative, not set in stone.
