The 12 Factor App methodology was last updated 6 years ago in 2017. A lot has changed in 6 years, so you need to look at them through a historical filter against your current options. Here are a few examples. Factor 2: Dependencies - The rise of containerization has made dependency isolation and replication easier. Factor 3: Store config in the environments can be a security nightmare, look at services like AWS Secrets Manager and HashiCorp Vault Factor 9. Disposability - Serverless models with cold starts need to be thought of differently from maximizing robustness with fast startup times. Factor 11. Logs - we know have observability platforms and tools that let us integrate monitoring and tracing providing practical insights.

I've been using a serverless-first approach for about eight years now. I wouldn't do it any other way unless forced to. It saves time, money, and forces you to simplify your apps. You may think there are many things that *can't* be serverless. It's true that some can't but I built the world's first serverless payments platform in 2015 and got it certified as PCI-DSS level 1 compliant. Don't be afraid to use serverless.

When evaluating a serverless solution, don't get it confused with managed services. While both aim to reduce the operational burden, they serve distinct purposes. A serverless architecture abstracts away all the underlying infrastructure, including server provisioning and maintenance. The cloud provider handles these tasks automatically and scales resources as needed. On the other hand, managed services offer a pre-configured environment where certain aspects, like backups, updates, and monitoring, are handled by the provider. Generally, a good serverless solution is zero cost when not being used whereas a managed service has a minimum cost.

Security is a crucial aspect of cloud native development, as your applications may handle sensitive data and face various threats and vulnerabilities.
