1 Identify the problem or need

The first step is to clearly define the problem or need that your innovation aims to address. What are the current challenges or limitations of existing structural engineering practices or products? What are the gaps or opportunities for improvement or differentiation? How does your innovation solve the problem or meet the need in a better way than the alternatives? You should be able to articulate the benefits and impacts of your innovation for the stakeholders, such as clients, users, contractors, regulators, or the environment.

From my experience, you also want to clearly understand why the current process or design came to be used as well. They may already be aware of the problem, have tried implementing solutions in the past, and have run into issues with proposed solutions. You also don't want to remove an unseen benefit of the current design or process by focusing too much on the problem because you may end up with a design that solves the problem but has a worse experience overall by getting rid of some other positive aspects of the current design.
