What's the best way to implement a BI governance framework?

Do not forget to define clear objectives: Once you have a comprehensive understanding of your current BI environment, it's a must to define clear objectives for your BI strategy. These objectives should align with your organization's overall goals and should be specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound (SMART). My formulae in setting up BI policy are 1. document the business that owns or controls the different data sources available, and establish the different frequencies on how the data is consumed in the BI platform. Establish the tools being used and the number of people using the tools

The BI policy is intended not just to regulate but also to facilitate the business to achieve its goals at a faster rate. i.e. BI reports for advanced analytics, and BI reports for operational reporting.

A point of caution is that it is possible to find a perfect solution to the wrong problem. The organization's business strategy should always serve as the north star, informing the data and BI strategies, and the scope and complexity of the governance framework. A bold vision should also include fostering a culture that values data as a critical business asset.

In my opinion, before designing policies, One should first check the existing system where data already reside. Then make a prototype design of the data visualization or presentation that how my data will look after implementing the BI. Possibly one can do the a/b testing of both old data and the prototype presentation. Show it to the real user for feedback. Once feedback is gathered, on the basis of that, one should go for designing the policies and procedures. In my opinion, this should be the 4th step in the BI implementation journey.

Be open to refining and formalizing the existing roles and responsibilities. This can be less invasive than a strictly top-down approach.

A BI governance framework is crucial for ensuring that an organization's BI operations are aligned with its business objectives and are carried out in a controlled, measured, and sustainable manner. Figure out what policies and procedures need to be established to ensure data quality, consistency, and security? How will these policies be communicated and enforced across the organization? What training and education programs will be implemented to ensure that users are capable and knowledgeable in using BI tools? How will ongoing training be provided as tools and technologies evolve? etc
