What's the best clustering algorithm for your data?

Often it is easier to just experiment with different clustering techniques and to assess the outcomes. K-means is usually my first port of call followed by hierarchical and then density based. I also subset the data as hierarchical clustering for example is computationally intensive. Consulting literature on your domain can speed up your analysis in this regard.
