A leader's responsibility here is to ease the passage of each team member through that stressful storming and norming phase. Here is where team building activities such as games outings and fun sessions play a crucial role. Never underestimate the power of fun at work.

Tools should be selected in a way that they should encourage productivity and enhance collaboration. If the tools like for communication or project management or collaboration, create hurdles. It is better to work without them.

Allow for inputs and listen to the experience of others when evaluating different tools. Of course you will have video, chat and email. How will you otherwise communicate as a team in this fast moving world? Even if you’re not working remotely, it’s sometimes much more effective to write than to talk; even if the opposite is usually true. Remember that tooling is not the core. Forcing everyone to use a certain pm tool will only lock people and limit creativity. A simple Kanban board could also work. What’s key is that team members can understand what’s happening so they can make their contributions. Not to add a critical-path timeboxed task chain that is planned in detail. Be flexible and allow for incremental improvements.

Sometimes certain base rules must be set to avoid some people from always taking upp all sound bandwidth. Also don’t fall in to the trap of mixing up excitement and energy with good ideas. Good ideas survives some critical questions. Excitement does not.

It is important to accept the fact that differences of opinion / perspective will always exist in a team environment. A leader's job is to facilitate the discussion and ensuring that each team member gets the chance to table his / her perspective. Respecting differences if any, and being able to agree to disagree is a critical soft skill for leaders to develop.
