What is your strategy for managing conflicts during a Sprint?

There is no "one size fits all" answer to conflict resolution. More often than enough , lack of "clear" communication creates conflicts. Start with the basics,bring all stakeholders to the same table and communicate on what is the bone of contention. Be open to hear from all stakeholders,gather all ideas and weigh the pros and cons of every idea.Some of the best ideas to resolve a conflict come from the simplest of ideas. Idea bashing stems creativity! Go about the whole process in a constructive way.People are encouraged to contribute effectively , if conflict resolution is done in a constructive manner. Communicate again! No good comes out of resolving conflicts and coming to an approach ,if it's not a lesson learnt for the next day.

It is always essential to have clarity. Ambiguity has been one of the major factors for conflicts. Dealing with conflict is not a walk in the park. No matter how ready you are or how many materials you read, it's highly complex to manage. Listening and empathy helps but a plan to conclude is essential. Can you just stop at that and not indulge or pave way for changes? It's like how you are told by a support representative that they understand your card is blocked or your phone is dead, but they offer no solution to you, nor they provide anything valuable that can ease your situation. Managing conflict requires diligent work on resolution once you fathom the situation. Conflicts need to have a pathway and a way forward.

One thing I found important is that the root cause of a problem cannot be so useful to solve a conflict, but identify the "Common main point". For example: he wants to eat hamburger and she wants to eat sushi. The root cause of the problem is that the couple have different goals - and it won't help us you to solve the conflict, right? So, what is the 'common main point' here? They are both hungry! We shouldn't attend the main Desires or Expectations of each other. In a project context, if the common main point is attended, they can work like a team: Neymar is the gunner, but everybody wins a medal!

Right people may not always be the senior most person in team. one need to select right people to resolve conflict by selecting someone who has deep understanding of the issue, can connect with people and find a win-win stratgey to resolve conflict.

With teams spanning multiple time zones, diversity is a given today. We have to accept and pave our way through it to succeed. I had team members \ stakeholders from US, France, Vietnam, India interacting on daily basis. I always made it a point to get more info on the celebrations and festivals of each region. Talking about it, sending greetings on such occasions help foster team engagement a lot. It is all about creating informal relations, formal engagement takes place day-in and day-out.

I wholeheartedly agree with seeking external help when conflicts become unmanageable or sensitive. However, it's vital for the Scrum Master to continuously coach the team on conflict resolution skills. Seeking external help should be a last resort, and teams should strive to resolve conflicts internally first. Furthermore, when external assistance is required, it's essential to work closely with the external source to ensure the team remains empowered and actively participates in the resolution process

Sometimes as a Scrum Master I have found you need to just give the folks a shake and remind them we are all adults and team members and the current conflict is simply counterproductive. No techniques or strategies, just simply getting the team into a 'room' and hashing out the conflict on an adult level. I have cut through tons of BS by having a simple meeting with the Scrum Team and letting everyone have a say about the issue and coming to a resolution to get us moving forward. If it is a personal problem or a personality clash we nadle that by simply getting the ones involved to act like adults and pocket it during working hours. Go down to the pub after work and try to get that sorted, but leave it at the door when you come to work.

In a scrum environment, as mentioned above, conflicts are inevitable especially amongst stakeholders. The suggestions put forward in this collaborative article are great, however despite all these good suggestions, there will still be various conflicts that persist. In such cases, when it seems more intractable, id suggest leading with empathy+creativity as the two mains skills to utilise- and that will often present options to progress. This wont be easy, depending on the circumstance, and will require the resolver to stretch their thinking along the two lines above to find a way forward.

I love this question. It allows me, as a Scrum Master, to practice my skills in showing empathy. Conflict usually arises when there's a miscommunication. I start by acknowledging what is happening and bringing the team back by asking questions like, "Is the conversation we are having now helping us move forward?" "What pain points are we experiencing as a team?". Brainstorming and collaboration become more effective when you lead with empathy and surface the problem to the broader team. It helps remove any blame in the conversation.
