A great thing to do to get the best business process, is to write down every single step your company takes from the time a new lead or client is reaching out, until the last step. Then try to see which of these steps can be eliminated or automated. Do it again every 3 months, you'll be surprised how much time and work will be eliminated.

I have two goals as an operations director: 1) Work with my team to figure out how to make the job easier. If it’s easier, that will indirectly, and sometimes directly, make the client experience easier. 2) Think ahead of the business teams, what can we improve so we aren’t reactive to business problems.

I have worked with a women's apparel company warehouse; the operations team handles the day-to-day functions, as usual, while the different project teams take a more strategic role, overseeing specific projects and initiatives aimed at improving and optimizing operations – installation of new software/equipment/machinery. Clearly state the goals, deliverables, and scope of a project in the project planning phase. Formulate Plans: Organize resources, set deadlines, and create thorough project plans with them. Evaluation of risks: Determine possible hazards and create plans for their reduction. Allocation of Resources: To guarantee project success, allocate resources such as staff, funds, and equipment. Reduce Waste and Increase Efficiency: Reduce waste and increase efficiency by making the best use of available resources. Handle project budgets by keeping an eye on them and making sure that expenses stay within predetermined bounds.

I think this section deserves some TLC! Today this is where the value is. I have met countless ops managers who have “done this for decades” but haven’t changed. Let me say this to you now…your job is not just to keep the freight moving! Your job is to provide the data accurately and quickly to your customer so they can keep their freight moving. Dwell time, utilization, claims these are all studied through data and analytics today. If you cannot provide these in a scientific manner then you are disregarding one of the top pillars of managing ops. It’s not enough today to tell customers “3 part paper and spreadsheets work cause we don’t miss cutoffs. “ My best advice: Think in terms of automation and APIs, not email and personnel!

It is imperative that Business Operations understand Business better to be able to carry out data analysis in a more meaningful manner . Continuous updations on development in data science tools is the only effective way, Business Operations can give edge to Organisations in serving customers in most profitable manner

I personally believe that Data Analysis and Reporting has become a time killer. This can be simplified by ensuring that everyone within a company is given a statistic/number they are responsible for. Each statistic/number should be connected to accomplish the Basic Purpose of the company. Then compiling Data Analysis and Reporting becomes simple. Rather than complex hours of work into obscure data points that don't really track what the purpose of the company is.

Business Operations are expected to ensure that the set quality standards for delivering customers needs are adhered by internal and external stakeholders without any exceptions. This becomes all the more important with the regulatory push for implementation of ESG ( Environmental, Social and Governance) standards by organisations .

Nothing replaces open, honest and respectful communication and collaboration with stakeholders, proactively informing them of impacts, addressing concerns, and seeking their input to ensure operational success and alignment with broader organizational goals. The human side cannot be neglected at all costs.

Working at field often not pay enough attention for HQ stakeholders engagement. This block many people’s career development.

I find that as an Operations Manager, continual learning helps the company to continually grow. I try to get to at least one workshop per quarter then spend the rest of the quarter applying what I've learned.

We will also consider problem solving skills, cross functional collaboration. Business processes optimization, team leadership and customer focus.

Understanding the value chain of the business, process enhancement for higher productivity, business partnering with various departments, training and enablement on operational aspects such as sales process, DOA work flows, new tools.

Change Agility is very important. Business plans change, resources are cut, new competition emerges, but targets remain. Business Ops should be structured to be able to quickly adapt and reconfigure to meet new expectations.

Defining your value streams, the groups of people who your product solves a problem for, is the foundation Operations Management is built on. Once this is understood things like customer success roadmaps and value stream mapping can give better insight into where an organization should apply its improvement efforts.
