The hero's journey is a great structure to start from. From experience, the best stories I've shared are when the audience feels relatable. When they can see themselves in the journey, from a past experience. When you have a relatable story, you create a connection with your audience.

We've recently been using this framework for marketing messaging (also using the book "Building a StoryBrand"). It's a great exercise that helps put the customer journey in perspective. Messaging that focuses on the customer first allows the brand to connect their frustrations to the product. In the end, that speeds up the time it takes a customer to understand your product's value.

There is a rhythm that is inclusive. A story is always for the benefit of the listener, we are living libraries of experience, of timing, of issues, and, of course, of the joy of being heard and inspired. I have been a professional storyteller and producer for children and they love being engaged and they love to repeat what they learn and share...it is not so different for the rest of us...Feeling a part of something is what makes the story come to life, whether business, family or challenges for us all. Stories are adventures and we are on it, in it and want to know and feel the story so that it is also our story in part. I have had audiences who sing along, who dance, who live and want more.

The Three - Act Structure should introduce the main characters,the setting, and the conflict in a way that makes the audience care about the characters and what happens to them. Escalate the stakes in the confrontation.The confrontation should be where the action of the story takes place and the stakes escalate.This is where the characters face challenges and setbacks,but they must also grow and change in order to overcome them. Resolve the conflict in a satisfying way. The resolution should be where the conflict is resolved and the consequences of the characters' actions are shown. This is where the story comes to a satisfying conclusion & the audience is left with something to think about. It is a helpful tool for organizing your story.

This is very well explained using Freytag's Pyramid of storytelling Freytag's Pyramid is a classic structure for analyzing the narrative arc of dramas, breaking down the plot into a series of parts. Exposition: The story's introduction. Characters, setting, and the basic situation are established. Rising Action: Events that build the narrative's tension and complicate the situation, leading towards the main conflict. Climax: The story's turning point, where the main character faces the primary conflict. The most intense moment. Falling Action: Events following the climax. Conflicts start moving towards resolution, though some tensions might remain. Dénouement (or Resolution): The story concludes, wrapping up loose ends and conflicts.

In the context of brand storytelling, the resolution is always your purpose / why you exist. Positioning yourself as the solution to the conflict is the most impactful way of building trust in your audiences. Brands that do this particularly well bring their audiences into the story. We, together as a community, stand up against the conflict and bring resolution.

Vogler's 'The Writer's Journey' was my initial reference guide as I navigated the transition from the familiar two-act structures to formats more aligned with local audience preferences.

I do visual storytelling and my point blank teaching is to move from textualization to visualisation to EMOTIONALIZATION. I do this by drawing metaphors around human actions.

Relatability is key here. First, we must understand our audience's needs, struggles, and desires. This is what informs the narrative. Using descriptive language, particularly around senses and movement, triggers the sensory and motor cortexes. Don't be afraid to experiment but avoid overly used terms, cliches, and platitudes; neuroscience proves bland language is ineffective.

In my experience, a lack of emotions, especially in oral storytelling, is the best way not to achieve an authentic voice. If you want to achieve authenticity, you have to embrace emotions.

Emotions are extremely crucial in storytelling as they create a very deep and lasting connection between the storyteller and the audience. With proper usage of emotions in storytelling, one could grab the attention of the audience with ease, create a profound impact and retain it as a lasting memory in the minds of the audience. Emotions remind us of the humanity that we share; that every story and character goes through real emotions, which gives a sense of meaningfulness and authenticity to it.

It is important to recognise that prompting different emotions will lead to different types of engagement. Fear is a powerful way to get people to stop doing something, but if you want them to start doing something, hope is more powerful. Anger will provoke strong engagement, but can prevent collaboration. Sadness, pride, love are all very different concepts, with very different outcomes.

In-media res is a popular technique in storytelling. The idea is to open the story with an element of surprise. You can do so by challenging your audiences. To successfully execute this technique, you must plant clues, misdirect attention or support cliches. A few examples that use In media res are: -Sixth Sense, -Black Mirror, -Fight Club -Old Spices, The Man Your Man Good Smell like

I love that one! The element of surprise, especially after a quiet break in oral storytelling, can push your audience to be more focused on your story.

Give a back story to all characters. Even if there are parts of the back story that you don't want to use, write one. It gives authenticity to the character when you are writing. This is similar to User Personas that you create.

Properly fleshed out characters are a joy to read or watch. Giving characters a past, quirks, idiosyncrasies, helps create a bond between the character and the audience. A complex character is always more enjoyable to perceive than a straight-edged one. If done well, often we remember even side characters as fondly as we do the protagonist and/or antagonist.

Agree. It is about the mood, the people and the purpose. So at times we don’t have time for a full blown there act sorry but we can still bring in anecdotes and emotional insights.

Collaborative or Participatory Storytelling is one of my go-to storytelling formats / strategies. The power of storytelling is best utilised when it is a 2-way street, allowing the teller and listener to interact and co-create a story together. This strategy works best when you are looking at bringing your listeners to solve a common problem together, share their personal perspectives, be seen and heard, create context in a given situation and agree to work together. Nudge the listeners to shape the story. For example, if you're trying to tackle the bring workplace efficiency, then you have to open a story that invites people to share practices that slow them down. Don't be preachy, be reflective & analytical.

Regardless of the type of framework (I love them all and use them interchangeably), I often find what works best is to do the work before building the story: 1. Know your audience, intimately. What are they motivated by? What's their current state of mind? Sense of humor? 2. Have a simple clear message. And we know simple doesn't mean easy! 3. Measure the heck out of how the story lands. Movies have box office sales too. And then improve the next act. Oh, and have fun at it too. ??

As a content creator, I understand the limitation of creating fresh, new video. As a result, I have learned that by adding new music and visuals to an outdated video clip can be just as enjoyable for the viewers. The sound of the audio, even if poor quality, gives an almost historical feel to the content and the new visuals with captions are dynamic and attractive for folks who aren't listening. Most platforms allow for in-app music and/or visual filters to be added, so creating content that you can add music or filters to in-app would be more beneficial for the algorithm on each platform.
