What are your favorite role-play scenarios for evaluating problem-solving skills in an interview?

Role playing typically, in the world of Sourcing/Recruiting is something I conduct post-hire, since not everyone performs in a live RP the same, it can be an unfair interview question vs a "tell me about a time" question to cover the same ground. Role playing in the seat; however, is entirely relevant and can be handled in a variety of ways. Some of my personal favorites are: Recruiter to Candidate, and Recruiter to Hiring Manager role playing

Here are my top two favorites: Project Roadblock: You're leading a project, and a critical component faces unexpected delays. The team is stressed, and deadlines are at risk. What steps do you take to address the situation and keep the project on track? Conflicting Team Dynamics: Your team members have conflicting opinions on a crucial project decision. How do you navigate through these differences, facilitate constructive discussions, and lead the team towards a consensus that aligns with project objectives?

This should be down to each and individual candidate. Some people that do role playing, could be their worst nightmare but some other people love it. If you can establish each persons strong points and adapt the recruitment process for each candidate but still keeping to the frameworks, then it's show its not just a flexible business but a good place to work.

I request from candidate to buy me a shirt or sweater etc. I want to learn if candidate can ask correct questions to find solution. I can check in how many steps s/he can reach the target. ( related with intelligence) Also relation between questions are important factor for me to understand if candidate is result focused or not.

I love using role-play scenarios because of their part in diversity hiring. Taking someone out of the traditional interview moment allows them to bring their authentic self to the table. It changes the energy in the room and allows the candidate to really show who they are. I also think this can sometimes be frightening and off-putting for a candidate with neurodivergence and disabilities, so the interviewer should determine whether it is right for the candidate.

Tailor role-play scenarios for diverse assessments. In customer service, evaluate how candidates handle complaints, refunds, or technical issues, emphasizing empathy and problem-solving. Sales scenarios reveal skills in identifying needs, presenting benefits, handling objections, and closing deals. Project management scenarios assess scope definition, resource allocation, risk management, progress monitoring, and results delivery. Consulting scenarios analyze problem-solving through data gathering, analysis structuring, insight generation, and recommendation presentation. Choose scenarios aligned with the role and industry for comprehensive evaluations.

Role play scenarios should include general subject matter a candidate would be expected to know as a subject matter expert in his field. Further, the information discussed during the role play exercise should not be specific to the hiring company, as this would be information to which the candidate would not likely have been exposed. Additionally, to ensure fairness and an even playing field, all candidates should be asked the same questions during a scenario. Finally, limit the number of concepts or areas being discussed to two or three, so that the candidate does not feel overwhelmed and you gain clearer insights as to each candidate’s knowledge and skill set.

For instance, a 'Situational Judgment Test' scenario where candidates are presented with a workplace dilemma and multiple response options can be employed. Their choices reflect problem-solving styles, devoid of interviewer biases. Also, incorporating a 'Blind Interview' format within role-play scenarios, where evaluators are unaware of candidates' identities, can be a bold step towards eradicating biases, ensuring a focus on skills and responses over personal attributes. Through such meticulously crafted scenarios, the recruitment process becomes more equitable, focusing solely on the competencies essential for job success

Common scenarios: problem-solving, customer service, sales, conflict resolution, leadership & negotiation. I'd go for these 2: Emergency Response and Teaching. In our company, we check for emergency response of bugs in the code, changes required in GTM & response to clients’ questions. When you see the behavior, it’s easy for you to make decisions. These is one scenario I’d like to share that we have seen during interviews in different colleges globally: For Financial analyst or advisor: Describe a client's financial situation $ & ask the candidate to recommend an investment strategy that aligns with the client's goals & risk tolerance. Evaluate their ability to analyze financial data, weigh risks & make informed investment decisions.

During a role-play scenario, maintaining clarity and relevance is of paramount importance. The scenario must directly align with the position the candidate is interviewing for. Additionally, it should be a situation that any candidate with a matching background can easily relate to, ensuring a reduction in bias.

Roleplay scenarios should be real-world scenarios and should help the person excel in the role. There is no wrong answer to this scenario but the candidate is expected to choose the best answer or out of box answer which can change the scenario differently

Prompt candidates to begin, observing their performance. Intervene or prompt as necessary. Conclude when the time's up or the problem is solved, thanking candidates for participation. Encourage reflection and seek feedback, asking them to rate their performance and pinpoint areas for improvement. This post-scenario assessment ensures a comprehensive understanding of their problem-solving abilities and potential for growth.

Having a structured interview process and explaining it to the candidate improves the candidate's experience. Role-play scenarios can be really intimidating to candidates or off-putting. But first by explaining the interview process and the why's. Will put them at ease. It aids individuals in effectively analyzing the questions posed by recruiters for the purpose of assessing their skills and gathering relevant information for the hiring team. Enhancing the candidate experience for a superior outcome.

Exatamente nesse período de fim de ano, há alguns anos atrás, conduzi um projeto de contrata??es temporárias para cobertura da Black Friday e extra Natal em um cliente da indústria de chocolates! Era um projeto nacional com mais de 100 vagas para os principais shoppings do Brasil! Eu e minha equipe tocamos as vagas do SE (exceto SP), CO, NO E ND. In this time, code review, refactoring, system design, algorithmic problem and bug scouting are the common role-play scenarios. AI will now make SE life very easy and make them very faster in almost everything related to coding and product delivery. But the client interaction and requirement clarification stays one of the most important role-play scenarios where candidates ask questions to clarify requirements, propose solutions and ensure a shared understanding. This is to assess communication skills, ability to gather requirements and ensure alignment between technical solutions and client needs.

Role play can be a valuable way to examine various perspectives. For instance, journalists may face ethical or conflict-of-interest situations. Thinking through some of these in advance and discussing the best approaches can help team members navigate tricky situations and always make decisions based on integrity.

Role playing interview can evaluate many soft skills like :- - Communication Skills - Active Listening - Creative Thinking - Handling Objections - Selling skills - leadership skills - Body language skills - Team working skills And so many other skills. That’s why it’s very important to design the role play in a scenario that matches the required evaluated skills. For evaluation we should have certain criteria to evaluate each skill. For example, if we evaluate body language we should monitor:- 1- Eyes Contact 2- Body gestures 3- Tone of the voice Having such specific criteria will make it easier to evaluate. Finally, role playing is not everything, it must be taken with the career history and the previous achievements.

Team Conflict Resolution: The candidate is part of a team experiencing a conflict. They must navigate the situation, address differing opinions, and find a resolution that satisfies all team members.

Even tough role play could be an effective method in the selection process, but keeping the room tension going smoothly is something that should not be ignored. Both candidates and employers should be able to address themselves freely and comfortably to ensure the productiveness of the session.
