In my experience, the most productive way to get people to be engaged is to help them connect the dots between what they do and how it furthers the organization’s mission. And then recognize and reward the behaviors you want to see. On an organizational level few individuals are solely responsible for desired accomplishments. But they are solely responsible for their individual behaviors. That’s why it’s best to recognize and reward behaviors. If your desired behaviors don’t lead to success, you have a leadership challenge to address. Not an engagement issue.

I especially appreciate when organizations create a collaborative environment in which members can acknowledge others in a meaningful way. This is key to set a safe and healthy environment that avoids the usual competitive reward system that can be harmful for many folks. Some ways i have found helpful is to give them specific tasks ,and make sure they know exactly what the tasks entail , with the firm assurance that they will be rewarded fairly.

As I mentioned earlier, it is imperative to recognize and reward collaboration and attempts at innovation, i.e., the behaviors you want to see, rather than the results.
