What are the top skills to develop as an Education consultant?

Ed Consultants must stay updated on trends and best practices. This sometimes means that you need to attend the same professional development your teachers and leaders would attend, which may seem counter-intuitive. The PD session could be at a conference, could be a webinar, or it could be a session with a specific train-the-trainer focus. In any case, going on gut and experience, while necessary, isn't sufficient.

As an education consultant, adept research and data analysis skills are essential, incorporating evidence-based, practice-informed, and knowledge-informed perspectives. Utilizing various methods and sources such as surveys, interviews, and literature reviews, this approach identifies nuanced needs, gaps, strengths, and opportunities within the educational context. The synthesis of evidence-based principles provides a robust foundation, complemented by insights from practical experience and theoretical understanding. Effective interpretation and presentation of findings, including data visualization techniques, inform decision-making and drive impactful actions.

Consultants know adult learning theory and espouses intent when designing learning resources that align with individual needs. Needs are determined by measures of success (metrics/data analysis). These measures of success (assessments) drives building learning systems using diverse strategies for mitigating competency gaps. Additionally, learning systems for building capacity work best when aligned with the systemic vision and missions where return-on-investment (ROI) is determined up front and impact is monitored on a continuum. Adults learn in different ways and providing choice regarding learning platforms and measures of success metrics are essential and opens the door to growth-producing feedback… a quick win… the employee has a voice!

I am convinced educational consultants can really excel in their roles if they develop these top three skills: Active listening. Expressing ideas and presenting data is great, but actively listening to other educators with genuine attention and without judgment is more valuable. Self-regulation. The role of an educational consultant requires creativity and freedom, but these mean little without planning and purpose. Having clear long-term goals and aligning our feelings towards our objectives make our work more efficient and effective. Perspective-taking. Seeing the big picture is fundamental. Consultants must know the latest trends in education but, more importantly, understand which tools, approaches, or methods apply in each situation.

Bringing an authentic perspective, also means bringing fresh ideas to the table. Sometimes this can be as simple as unlearning old norms to re-teach towards new discovery. Innovation is just as much about creating synergy as it is about trying to create new ideas.

This requires effective leadership, inspiring others, and negotiating with partners. My ABCs formula for leadership; Assessment, Being Flexible, and Creating a Fostering Environment—are pivotal. Assessment involves understanding oneself and the team, leveraging strengths and weaknesses for cohesion. Being Flexible emphasizes adapting leadership styles, recognizing the inefficacy of a one-size-fits-all approach. Creating a Fostering Environment focuses on cultivating a space where team members feel valued and empowered, fostering accountability and competence.

As an education consultant, I ensure that I carve out time for my own CPD needs and also to make myself aware of trends. Being aware of what your clients may need in a years time is part of my USP and an area I would encourage anyone else looking into education consulting to develop. You are being paid for the value you add, to your client, and part of this is helping your client to have a competitive edge.

When you focus on listening first to pull information through questioning instead of pushing ideas, it allows you to move past the surface-level issue and move to deeper conversations. Plus, the more you listen, the better the relationship.
