I would say Product/market fit is your number one priority. Without it, there is no team. There are no customers. There is no business model. It is critical to a) narrow down the use case(s) where your solution addresses key pain points, b) co-design your product/solution with your customers, and c) then expand the customer base. Product/market fit may seem obvious but it is only so when you have multiple customers who are willing to pay for it. A startup can not do anything else without validating the fit. That is what the CEO/Founder should have as their top priority to start.

Be humble, listen and conduct ruthless validating learning about your thesis. Don't over invest too early on assumptions until they are proven. The immutable steps of building that startup are: MVC, IPR, MVP/MVF, MVR and MVT. You can not escape these. You can not jump ahead. So be humble, and check each of these boxes: Minimally Viable Category, Initial Product/Service Release, Minimally Viable Product/Features, Minimally Viable Repeatability, Minimally Viable Traction. This traction gap framework will give you the best chance for success.
Your team is your most valuable asset, and your culture is the glue that holds them together. As a leader, you need to hire the right people, motivate them, empower them, and retain them. You also need to foster a culture of trust, collaboration, innovation, and feedback, where everyone feels valued and aligned with your vision and values. Definitely honesty is key, it’s very easy to communicate what people want to hear, but much harder to always share what they need to hear. Don’t fall into the trap of only hiring people that align to your approach. We all have blind spots and you need to hire people who cover those blind spots and have the courage and support to highlight them. I think it takes true courage honesty and grit to be able to value growth even if it doesn’t show im numbers and year end finance. I've always committed myself to walking miles in my customers' shoes, literally. Market research isn't just surveys; it's about engaging with your market on a personal level. By far, priority #1. Unless you are the amazing 1% that build products or gets product built by Github rockstars for equity - and these start selling on their own (like say, Atlassian features) you have to spend more than 60% of your time raising funds. Funds ensure continuity, give ability to ride out troughs, facilitate pivots where necessary, and really at some point result in snowball effects - whereby they attract more funds and pave the path towards exits. So put on your 'Sales hat' and remember - nothing happens without a Sale. :-)

The start up mentality should not be build it and they will come. You need that anchor account and build momentum. Do not focus on having the perfect product, if you do you may run out of funding before that is achieved. You may initial do a pilot with the client at cost and gather feedback from the stakeholders to improve the product or service. I highly recommend your first priority after that is to hire someone who can ask for the order and close. As a new product or service there will be skepticism. The normal rebuttals are “let someone else try before we do” “what happens if you go out of business” “we have no budget” If you get the last answer you are calling on the wrong person. Constantly be building your pipeline.

1. Cash. 2. Cash. 3. Paying customers (not friends & family) 4. People. This needs to be scalable beyond you. Always be recruiting. 5. You. Protect yourself from overworking, and make certain to pay yourself first.
Values. Both internal and those that you will project towards and reinforce with customers and all stakeholders. What does this company stand for? What will employees and customers think of when they talk about this company and product? This is perhaps more important than ever in a world full of choices but also people who care about what a company stands for. As an aside, I worked for one company that had to give employees a cheat-sheet of company values because they were so motherhood and also detached from their daily experience.
Beyond the core priorities, startup leaders should be adaptable and resilient. Embrace a learning mindset and be prepared to pivot when necessary. Stay informed about industry trends, emerging technologies, and regulatory changes. Foster a network within the industry and seek mentorship to gain valuable insights. Lastly, champion diversity and inclusion, recognizing the strength that diverse perspectives bring to the organization. No longer be a startup. That is priority 1 for leadership - every day. It's that simple. What is your path from where you are, to no longer a startup? We like the idea of startups as this broad definition of innovation, culture, and scrappy mechanisms for success. However, in the end, you are starting up a business and the goal is to be a business, no longer a startup. Find your definition of when you cross that inflection point, determine what timeframes, assets, and milestones are needed along the way. Play jazz to get part of the way, turn that to science. All the above are activities that help, to varying degrees in various contexts, but if you never stop being a startup ... well that's the whole ball game isn't it.
