Depending on where the thermostat is placed draining all the fluid from the rad and engine may not be nessasary. Usually it is located on the top of the engine and if the rad is lower than where the thermostat is placed you can just remove a bit. But changing older coolant is not a bad thing either. Use a pet/child and environment friendly non toxic coolant when replacing the coolant is always a good idea.
