I’ve observed that some feel that boundaries are barriers to connection, however, it might be helpful to see boundaries as ways to define a space. Once defined by time, purpose, expectations, scope, etc, it is so much easier to invite others into this space, knowing that there is clarity around shared objectives. This can create a safe environment for vulnerability and trust.

Creating a coaching agreement at the beginning of a contract, as well as at the beginning of a session, is a key element of coaching, and one mandated by the ICF. Asking what a client hopes to achieve, and just as importantly, what might be holding them back, can launch the session into new territory that provides important insights that allow a client to make significant leaps forward in their goals.

This models a growth mindset and if we fully lean into this ourselves, we gain an experiential understanding of what it takes to grow, the environment of praise, modeling, and support.
