What techniques can you use to improve 3D prototyping quality?

Simple fit and presentation models can be done with inexpensive processes. Functional testing demands materials and processes more closely matched to the intended final part. From this, the selection of what process and material to be used is established. You don't pick process first.

Commercial and industrial printers do not require or offer variations of print speed or temperature, suffer few issues of cracking or warping, resolve overhang and support in the slice/processing steps, have no issue with vibrations, and resolve holes and manifold issues automatically. In my experience using a desktop 3D printer, I learned that clear PLA filaments typically require elevated temperatures (215C) whereas solid color PLA filaments print better at lower temperatures (200C). The result will be better, if the material cools down in an controlled enclosed environment, like an EOS model vs some Creality. Other factors might be how the printer works, e.g. the motion of the print head, if it is a CoreXY, Delta or SCARA printer. Next to settings, the overall setup will also greatly influence the outcome of a print.

Again, obvious. The alignment of end use and material selection with the intended use of the oart and the part being represented by the prototype is the specification. You don't just pick a material without determining ultimate purpose of a prototype.

The appearance of layer lines is a familiar challenge in in FDM/FFF 3D printing, Although this feature is inherent in most 3D prints, selecting the right material can reduce its visibility. Too many passive phrases, you might want, etc. offers very little value to the reader. Of course, if theend use part is made of a material that needs conditioning to reach fullest strength or a desired finish, regardless of material or process, you will need to do post processing. What is nit covered in this article is that FDM materials are best suited for strength close to a similarly molded plastic part, with medium to large details, but require finishing if smooth appearance is needed. SLA is excellent in small details, generally used for appearance models, and low stress applications. Metal printing offers near cost strength for stress testing, but demand significant finish work to produce final appearance and tolerances. Etc.

Never underestimate the effort required for post processing! More planning during the slicing stage such as which kind of support structure to be used, the orientation of the print and so on may directly impact the effort required to post-process the prototype. So plan ahead!

Post processing is in my opinion much more complex to address as it is require to deal with different specialties such as heat treatment, post machining, surface finishing and cleaning. Every single steps is complex and require therefore know-how. Depending what you want to achieve, post processing will be a much more important aspect that 3D printing. Design requirements will define each steps to be performed. In our company we mainly use heat treatment, post machining, surfaces finished, polishing and cleaning.

My comments are similar to those of others: this is largely obvious and unlikely to be of much use to anyone. You also can't really perform simulations on a physical part. If you want to discuss the rapid iteration time of 3D printed parts, then you'd be better off discussing that in a separate section as opposed to a step in the process which boils down to 'check how it worked and if it passes muster, you're done'. What you could do here which might be interesting is describing the impact of a faster and cheaper iterations, such as testing multiple designs simultaneously.
