Help measure and define the impact of your work 4. Help you stand out and get noticed 5. Support a stronger narrative around your career.

As one is developing a new skill or capability, it is wise to ask peers and experts to provide feedback on how you are performing. These are especially important for technical skills development. Do not be nervous to ask others and take every positive and constructive criticism to heart and identify how to improve. For soft skills including team interactions and collaboration skills, a 360 survey can be helpful. Once feedback is no longer sought, do not be disappointed if promotions and raises stagnate as well.

Getting a 360 view is paramount - different people will have different experience of what it's like to work with you. The feedback you will get from your juniors will highlight development points that your leaders might have not picked up on. It will also help you develop yourself as a mindful leader who values the perspectives of their subordinates. However: 1. Be careful to recognise where the feedback is coming from, if it's genuine, and carefully assess its relevance/validity. 2. Try not to take it too personally - these are simply areas for growth and it should not become an attack on your identity. Ensure your confidence is rooted in your own trust in your abilities rather than the opinions of others.

Networking with influential peers and other leaders that interact with your leader can help with spreading support for your potential promotion. But it's not to a campaign for a promotion. Rather, collaborating with these stakeholders, showing your drive, motivation and proficiency as well as seeking their advice for issues and growth will demonstrate your capabilities. Then also share your desire for more responsibilities. You will automatically create a persona and brand that is recognizable. Then these stakeholders will be comfortable to recommend and endorse you for promotions as those discussions are raised. The other leaders may also create positions with you in mind and provide an adjacent opportunity.

If you can, understand who are the decision makers when it comes to promotions and ensure that that they are aware of all the amazing work you are doing. Understand what matters to them, what their priorities are and make sure that you highlight the areas of your work that resonates with them most. Network to find a sponsor. Invest time to learn how you can add value to them and their career/network and build their confidence in what you have to offer - if comfortable, they will be the person who could will open doors for you and mention your name in rooms you've not been to yet.
