What strategies can you use to overcome setbacks and failures in your data engineering career?

Regardless of how much technology changes, many concepts are immortal. Regardless of how many buzzwords you see, the ideas behind it are likely not hard to get if you have a solid understanding of the major concepts in the field. For example, it's been decades since SQL is being used, and many tools that came nowadays use SQL under the hood. If you are proficient in SQL and you understand database theory, you'll be very proficient in any tool that uses SQL under the hood by default.

In the Data Engineering world, where new tools emerge regularly, maintaining a humble and learning-oriented mindset is key. When I began, my Python skills were basic, and cloud concepts were unfamiliar. However, by dedicating time to hands-on exploration, even spending a month on a single API request, I not only overcame challenges but also gained confidence. This journey instilled in me the belief that with persistence and a growth mindset, I can adapt to and master any technology. Embracing continuous learning has become my compass, guiding me through the ever-changing landscape of data engineering.

Yes mindset plays a big role to survive in corporate world. Growth is consistent when you keep pushing yourself and learn new technologies. Data Engineering is no different and it needs extensive knowledge and attention to make worthy growth in this domain. Keeping all the small wins into the account and celebrating each success within everyone will increases the confidence and keep the growth curve high only.

Certainly….!!! Adopt a growth mind set is great trait, you can sense its importance once you achieve it. In the data engineering world things are so dynamic, in 2011-15 Spark developers have different roles, sql developers have different roles but within last 2-3 years all roles gets merged under data engineering roles, now we have one tree which have differ branches connected with each other. Those days are not far away when AI is also become the crucial part of data engineering and if we cannot adopt growth mindset, then it will be tough for us to match the race.

This approach helps me understand the underlying issues and learn from them. I also stay updated with industry trends and continuously upskill, ensuring that each setback becomes a stepping stone towards greater expertise and resilience. Embracing a growth mindset fosters adaptability and innovation, crucial for thriving in the ever-evolving field of data engineering.

This could be a lack of communication, a misunderstanding of the problem, or a lack of clarity about the goal. Another strategy is to break the problem down into smaller pieces that are easier to solve. Finally, you can try to find creative solutions that are outside of the box. In my opinion; more that specific agile methodology guideline to use, remember this goal phrase "delivery a functional minimum product to use that it can evolve fast on time": the methods don't replace the goal. Detect possible challenges to achive this phrase; in general, i classify it in some groups: ?? Interaction, responsibility and constraint among teams. ?? Documentation. ?? Organizational structure. ?? Tool, infrastructure and system.

Break down complex problems into smaller tasks. Conduct regular retrospectives for reflection. Embrace change and remain adaptable. Leverage Agile frameworks (Scrum, Kanban). Implement Agile project management tools. Use automation to streamline workflows. Maintain a prioritized backlog. Regularly reassess priorities.

The community is the most valuable resource(at least for me). I learned more in the community posts/comments than other sources. Don’t waste your time when you face a blocking point. Sometimes you need a new perspective! Post/search your question or doubt in the community sites and get help from your fellow data engineers. One important point: Please give the best answer some credit as it helps others to find that more easily!

Mantenerse en ella te permite obtener información de primera mano de personas que conocen los productos y detalles de estos que pueden servir como inspiración para desarrollar tus propios proyectos, poder implementarlos e incluso tener comunicación directa para recibir apoyo o consultar cuando algo se hace difícil. Mantener la curiosidad ?? y el deseo son la clave para seguir avanzando en la carrera de datos. En un mundo globalizado dónde las tendencias cambian y las herramientas evolucionan constantemente es preciso mantenerse atentos y también devolver a la comunidad lo que nos ha entregado.

Be humble enough to realize that you may not have all the answers for the problems you face. Connect with other people in the community to get their opinion / feedback. Also be willing to help others. Only then people will be willing to approach you when they face problems.

Das ist schon fast der wichtigste Faktor aus meiner Sicht. Man kann nicht erfolgreich werden ohne von den Anderen anerkannt zu werden. Empfehlungen sind immer noch alles in der Arbeitswelt. Data engineering is changing very quickly because speed of innovation is very high in the tech industry. Having said that, the solution that worked yesterday will not be the best solution today so a lot of times you will be the first one to tackle the challenge at hand and it will require a lot of experimenting, failure and learning from those failures.

Technology changes very fast. New tools and techniques gain popularity very quickly. It is not possible to keep abreast of all developments. Learn the basics and then apply your experience using the technology concerned. Best way to learn is to write small applications to understand how things work.

Any successful solution to data engineering problem is not often reached without number of failed attempts. Also, what you learn from these failures is called an experience, and gathering these experiences may lead you to the expertise in that area. Failure is part of and plays an important role in data engineering. Your designs and ideas may “fail” by not meeting required criteria or constraints. However, engineers by heart will take this opportunity to learn and analyze why the design did not perform as expected. They make changes and test again to evaluate the solution with new changes. Through such iterative attempts, we learn from our failures to improve subsequent designs.

To stay relevant and keep upgrading the skills we need to always improve on few perspectives like to have the knowledge on latest updates, joining community , interacting with the members of same domain, having a mentor is also a good thing. Self confidence and consistency is required here to grab all the right tools and information that you need to stay relevant and updated.

So, it is important to try and come back on track to find the next success which will be accompanied by the series of successes. Some activities which may help are: Feedback from Network: Consult you network of peers, leaders, team or the online community on how they came over similar situation. Training and Learning: If the failure was due to technical or functional challenges, invest time to upskill in that field. Share with team: No one can achieve bigger goals alone. Prepare the team so that they are prepared for similar situations in future. Document if possible.

Une chose le développement en général n'est pas facile, très peu gratifiant pour les juniors. Il le devient de plus en plus lorsque l'on évolue en seniorité et que l'on résout des problématiques. Une attitude que je m'efforce d'employé et de regarder la où j'étais 5/6 mois en arrière. En général on peut voir l'évolution c'est là qu'on peut établir un plan d'action pour se dire qu'es ce que l'on peut améliorer. Le succès n'est pas très loin
