We recently automated our hold system and rely on the ILS's reporting tools. Previously, patrons were not allowed to place items on hold from home that were on the shelves. We changed that around the same time as the automation. Every morning, the staff member who is responsible for opening the library will check that morning's "on-shelf hold" report, pull the items, and "trap" the holds. We have another staff member who calls the patrons to let them know their holds are ready, but more tech-savvy patrons can log into their accounts from home and see that the holds are ready to be picked up.

Make sure your contact information is up to date with the library, especially if you have changed it recently. Also, do let the library have all your contact avenues: sometimes phone networks go down, or email servers are not functioning. Therefore having more than one accurate way to be contacted about a hold is always a good idea.
