What strategies can you use to improve the accuracy of your machine learning predictions?

Based on my past experiences, the pivotal role of data quality in machine learning cannot be overstated. Rigorous data cleaning and preprocessing to address issues like missing values, duplicates, and errors are fundamental. This groundwork enhances model reliability and accuracy. Additionally, effective feature engineering—transforming existing data into more predictive inputs—is critical. By focusing on these aspects, you can significantly improve the accuracy of your machine learning predictions, ensuring your model performs optimally in real-world applications.

One thing to recognize is that real-world data is noisy. I implemented 2 steps to my analysis. 1) Making sure that the training data is homogeneous and representative of both the test and the unknown data by finding how the data is distributed across the variable space. If I have categorical variables I tend to divide the data into bins and explore if there are bins that are under- or over-represented. If I have continuous variables, I try to see what the distribution of the data I have. Then I come up with a strategy to sample homogeneously. 2) After running the test models, identifying a set of samples, or a set of variables that might be the culprits of noise. Then I apply the steps of feature engineering to overcome these issues.

A quality data that meets your requirements and your needs is half the work done! If you have quality data to begin with it will a lot hassle including but not limited to data cleaning, noise handling, feature selection and engineering, preprocessing and normalization to name a few.

Once the data is clean, feature engineering comes into play. This step involves creating new features or transforming existing ones to better represent the underlying patterns in the data. For instance, extracting relevant information from text or engineering temporal features from timestamps can significantly improve model performance.

Proper prediction should also be checked at the deployment phase, maybe the model was not well deployed and this could be the reason why the output is also wrong.
