What strategies can you use to ensure your team is working towards a common goal?

I agree that the What and the Why are important to be included in the product vision , I would add that the product target be high lighted in the vision along with the roadmap of previous products and competitive products or alternatives. If the team is less mature, these become even more important so that every team member believes they have sufficient understanding to contribute to how the problem could be solved differently. More than just development engineering should be included such as manufacturing, quality, field engineering, sales as well as customer inputs about their experience with alternative solutions.

Before developers begin work, it’s important to share with them the “Why”, before getting to the “What”. Giving the team a foundational understanding of the problem we are trying to solve enables not only less product/engineering/design friction in terms of product direction, but it also enables quicker decision making on behalf of the ICs when the dev work actually begins (the “what”), because engineers also have the same understanding of the main goals and objectives.

Customer centrality is essential in the initial phase of product development. Understanding customer needs and the problem the product solves is crucial for success throughout its life cycle. Simultaneously, analyzing the competition is important. An analysis of competitors reveals strengths, weaknesses, and opportunities, guiding product differentiation. These elements should be integrated into the product vision, ensuring it is innovative and aligned with market trends. Customer centrality and competitor analysis are continuous processes, adaptable to market changes. Therefore, the product vision is dynamic and should be constantly updated based on customer feedback.

One of the best things I've learned is to make sure there are demonstrable milestones during the product development cycle so that user feedback (internal or external users) can be quickly attained. Initial feedback on an early stage demonstration will either confirm you are moving in the right direction or more often than not point you in a slightly different direction that will greatly improve the final product.

I've almost always seen the alignment within the Project Team members about the Objectives of the Project Effort.. until recently when I observed two Business Verticals (although) reporting to the same CEO had different objectives from the Project and hence very different perspectives of looking at Project Risks and Issues. What worked for me was:- i) to check the origin of misalignment and who are spreading that to the other team members and discuss in close-groups for solution alternatives, ii) to have a weekly Project Review meeting jointly with Project Sponsor and Project Leaders and key team members of both verticals. Often times, IC developers get overlooked on a team - viewed as task oriented members of the team vs collaborators. While it is incredibly important to create relationships with leads, having ICs feel heard, respected, and celebrated often leads to better velocity as well as a higher quality product.

You can't really understand the culture in which your product will be used until you spend time in the customer's shoes. Most development teams never see a customer's environment nor spend time with a customer who is really needs your product. A development team leader (not just a product manager) needs the customer experience to really guide the development of a product.

Establish a feedback loop, ensuring continuous dialogue and collective ownership of the learning and improvement process. 1. Conduct regular feedback sessions, encouraging open communication. 2. Share insights through compelling storytelling, connecting data to real-world scenarios. 3. Utilize metrics to quantify progress and areas for enhancement. 4. Provide actionable recommendations, empowering the team to implement changes.

One thing that I have found helpful is to start out the project with the voice of the customer (VOC) and show the baseline (where are we now) and goal of the project (where do we need to be). Once the VOC is clear, it is much easier to recognize and prioritize actions that drive us toward the goals we want to achieve. This will make your product better able to compete in the market too.

This practice, which I’ve consistently applied, allows for timely adjustments and ensures that all team efforts are aligned with the project goals.
