If there is a significant amount of egress traffic from an internal server, it could indicate data exfiltration to an adversary's C&C server. As a security analyst, understanding events and correlating patterns is essential for effectively handling incidents. All suspicious behaviors tell a story; our role is to find the complete story and ensure it has a satisfactory resolution.

There's simply no good excuse for not having world-class data backups these days. Storage is cheap and there are a ton of great solutions for backing up your organization's critical data. Remember the 3-2-1 Data Backup rule: 3: always have THREE (3) copies of your data on-hand - your live production data (1), and two (2) backup copies of your data 2: store those two backups on two (2) different forms of media (i.e. an external hard drive or tape, and a separate cloud backup) 1: make sure at least one (1) of your backups is stored offline and either air-gapped or immutable (meaning the data cannot be changed) Backing up your data will not prevent a cyber attack, but it will help your business recover, rather than lose all your data.

Maintaining multiple backups in different, independent locations is crucial. This strategy ensures that even if one backup is compromised or fails, others are still available. Regularly testing the restoration of data is essential to confirm that backups are functional and reliable. These measures ensure that when the need arises, your systems can be restored swiftly, turning your backup strategy from a theoretical safety net into an actual, effective recovery solution.

Follow 3-2-1 rules in backups: Create 3 copies of data, 2 at least in different media (cloud, NAS, external storage) and keep 1 copy off site.
