What are the steps to install a motherboard in a desktop computer?

In my experience I have learned that having a mat to organise your screws is always better. Loosing your screws for parts make it difficult to handle computer repair work.

Installing a motherboard in a desktop computer: Prepare: Gather tools and ground yourself. Remove old motherboard (if applicable). Prepare case: Check standoffs and install I/O shield. Install CPU and RAM. Install motherboard into case. Connect cables: Power, front panel, data. Install expansion cards (if needed). Cable management. Close case and secure. Power on and test.

Ensure the parts you have are not only compatible with the computer case, but also compatible with each other. Make sure the motherboard does not need a BIOS flash to bring it up to compatibility with the CPU you have chosen.

In my experience, it is also a good idea to drain out the power by pressing the power button again after plugging out the power cord.

It's also a good habit to take pictures of wiring. If you're not someone who has done this multiple times, remembering where some wiring is plugged in can keep you hunting for a while. When replacing anything, it's always good to make some kind of visual aid or notation how everything is hooked up.

I usually put everything in but the GPU before installing in the case - a lot of times it is in the way of my hands when trying to connect everything up, so it goes in last.

Make sure that the power is turned off on the system and the power cord and all other cables are removed from the desktop. Make sure that you have the right motherboard from the manufacturer. Next you will need to figure out how to get into the desktop computer. Each Manufacturer does things a little differently, also might change by Model. Once you have the case open you will have to determine what needs to be moved out of the way to replace the motherboard. Take pictures before you jump in. Get on Youtube and watch a video for the same make and model. Next unscrew the old mother board from the system and move the components over like a processor and your ram. Screw the new mother board in and reverse the process.

Some cases have raised spots specifically so you don't need standoffs. If you test fit the motherboard in place and there's still a gap between the board and metal on most of the back of the board when the IO is aligned, you won't need standoffs. If you are replacing and there are already standoffs, just leave the old ones in place.

Make sure to get the right size for the case for the right motherboard. A smaller case won’t fit a bigger motherboard. There are 4 form factor of motherboard that you should be aware of: Atx, microAtx, mini-Atx, and itx.

Ensure that the case you are using is compatible with the motherboard form factor. Most mid-tower cases will not support full size ATX mobos. You may also have to move/remove the preinstalled standoffs so they are in the correct positions to mount your motherboard. A decent case may have the standoff holes labelled by form factor, but if it does not you may wish to remove the standoffs and test where the board sits to visually identify which holes line up with those in the board.

Make sure you only install standoffs in holes on the case that have matching holes on the motherboard. Adding a standoff without a corresponding motherboard screw hole can short out or even damage the motherboard.

A titre personnel, je préfère installer l'alimentation en premier dans le boitier. Cela facilite grandement le cablage, notamment au niveau du ou des connecteur(s) P8 (alimentation CPU le plus souvent située en haut à gauche de la carte mère). Ce connecteur est souvent plus difficile à atteindre si on a un gros ventirad sur le processeur.

Before you install the power supply, make sure it is able to provide sufficient wattage for your motherboard and other components like gpu .etc

First make sure to get proper PSU for the model of MOBO, for potential upgrade and for nextgen GPUs. Install it on right position - for larger ones with high wattage (heavy too) always get a case with bottom side mount!

One hiccup a new system builder may run across is forgetting to toggle the PSU as well. Most modern PSUs have a switch on the back near the plug that toggles power for the PSU itself. If that switch is off, it doesn't matter how many times you try the power button on the case, it won't power up. Another potential issue is the front panel connectors. These are for your power and reset buttons and maybe a drive use indicator. Most of the time the pin-outs for these are the same across board manufacturers, but always double check either the manual or on the board itself so you don't mix up the positive/negative connections and to ensure everything is plugged in to the proper pins.

One small detail but often overlooked, make sure to not over-torque the screws. Specially those laptop bottom panel screws. Using your finger tips on hand tools to tighten screws is a good way of to control how hard you tighten them.

Make sure to do your own research before purchasing the motherboard. Check if the I/O ports match your case. Check that the new motherboard supports your old components such as RAM, ssds or hdds.

Don't be too intimidated. Its actually quite easy. Just take your time and be gentle with the computer components. Watch a few YouTube videos. Try even getting a cheap old computer off craigslist or market place for like $20-50 and practice.

It's very important to note the technical specifications of the motherboard as this will dictate the compatible parts and limitations. For instance, the connectors are different for the different types of hard drives. Also, check for BIOS or other updates for the motherboard. The MB may come with older drivers or BIOS configurations on the accompaning CD/DVD depending on the age of it; newer versions may be available online. Also, check in device manager to ensure the drivers for installed devices are installed and functioning properly--there are no question marks or errors indicated; if so, try to find proper drivers online or on the accompanying CD/DVD.

Make sure you have the right tools .for the job. Magnetic screw driver ,screw holder ,screw container. Electronic vacuum to clean the dust or an air canister,and a new mother board . But make sure the peripherals are of the same type as the old one.
