For example, are you building a prototype? A prototype might be used for a short duration. You might need to show stakeholders progress often. You might care more about short-term gains. You might throw away the prototype and build a production system later. You might need just enough test coverage for the duration of the project.

The choice of methodology must be aligned with skills and knowledge of the team that will be used to deliver the project. You cannot choose Agile if the people in your project team have little or no knowledge of Agile

This methodology is suitable for projects with clear and stable requirements, low complexity, and high predictability. Agile is an iterative and incremental approach, where the project is divided into short cycles called sprints, and the deliverables are constantly tested and improved based on feedback. This methodology is suitable for projects with changing and uncertain requirements, high complexity, and low predictability. Scrum is a specific type of agile methodology that follows a set of roles, events, and artifacts to deliver value. It works best for projects that need frequent collaboration, innovation, and customer satisfaction. Lastly, Kanban is another type of agile methodology that visualizes the workflow, limits the work in progress, and optimizes the efficiency and quality. This methodology is suitable for projects that need continuous delivery, flexibility, and transparency.

Methodologies are frameworks. Not every component in the framework is needed to deliver the project so you need to assess the size and timeline of the Program and determine what component parts I.e Deliverables will be needed. Don’t over complicate matters but trying to tick every box

The third step is to evaluate the pros and cons of each methodology, and how they affect your project outcomes. For example, Waterfall is easy to plan, manage, and document but can be difficult to accommodate changes, delays, and errors, with low customer involvement and satisfaction. Agile is responsive to changes, feedback, and customer needs but can be hard to estimate, control, and document with a high dependency on team skills and collaboration. Scrum has a high productivity, quality, and innovation but requires strong commitment, discipline, and communication with potential conflicts and confusion among roles and responsibilities. Lastly, Kanban improves efficiency, flexibility, and transparency but lacks structure, guidance, and deadlines which may lead to overwork and burnout.

If the project has fixed scope/features, waterfall will be the right methodology. Whereas if the project had unknown requirements, agile will be the right approach.

I use a template of project deliverables based on timelines of a project to decide what needs to de published during the Lifetime of the project. Don’t not generate output that is not going to be read.
