"Creating Inventory data model" is too generic statement. You can start the conversation by presenting inventory conceptual model which will outline core entities. Then you can continue to investigate what type of inventory application your client is seeking? Is it inventory management application or specific aspect of the inventory management such as stock management, material management, etc. Or analytical application? These two distinct categories will dictate required modeling effort.
