What steps can you take to transition to a new coaching specialization?

At the risk of sounding flippant or arrogant, I think we over complicate this! Creating a niche is of course good - to bring focus and differentiate. But it is crucial to remember that while we coach for life/ performance/ transitions/ leadership impact/ anything else, we all ‘coach human beings’… and that requires understanding the whole person, their context and aspirations and coaching them on their needs. To me, whether I’m a life coach or an executive coach merely reflects the kinds of situations I’m more likely to have coached around. Either way, the starting point and focus is my coachee. And very few people live or operate in compartments! So I would just meet my coachees where they are. Every single time. No transition required.

Initiate learning; courses, books, and mentors expand horizons. Value every experience; each step teaches. Engage with peers and clients; feedback is gold. Evolve; adapt your approach as you grow. Forget overthinking; coaching thrives on action and adaptation. Jump in, the water’s fine, and the depth you’ll reach comes not from the edge but from diving. This journey’s about embracing the art within the science, and the true mastery comes from the swim, not the dive.

I would start with self-assessment of my current skills and interests in coaching, then explore various coaching specialization to understand the demand, explore and choose appropriate to my goals experiential coaching training program, connect with the professionals in the new field, practice in coaching, also doing my own coaching supervision, and finally positioning myself as an expert through effective branding, marketing and communication strategies.

Well, if we speak about coaching, all starts with the question what we want to achieve at the end. As simple as that. If the goal is to create atmosphere and a genuine interaction between you and client to assist him/her in achieving his/her dreams, than the devoted coach should seriously consider learning different methods and tools to develop further. The world is changing and we should change too:) the principles of coaching stay the same, but the tools are developing.

We coaches often live in the clouds. “How are your clients going to pay you?” When I ask this question to aspiring coaches who want to set foot in a new area and ask me for advice, I often get blank looks. It's so common in our profession to be super driven, ambitious, and hardworking to help a specific group of people, but then have no business plan on how to sustain yourself financially. It's a simple Venn diagram of multiple elements. We should enjoy it, we should be good at it, and it needs to pay our bills. Defining what we want for our clients and what we want to earn are two essential things to figure out early on.

Coaching is great, but not by itself alone. It needs to be a part of an overall development plan Within this plan, specialist knowledge forms a key component. More and more you know about less and less, the better!!

This is one of the areas where we sometimes have a tendency towards overreliance on data. Data is certainly very useful, but get into the fabric of the dialogue and community in which you want to coach! There's no better substitute for starting conversations in that community. It will give you keen insights that will help buttress your value proposition as you learn more about where the potential value gaps are. First-person dialogues may seem "slow" sometimes within the context of research, but they're a phenomenal way to not only gather feedback, but build simultaneously build relationships.

market demand is a qualitative metric and an ongoing process. There are tons of frameworks out there that can help product managers and executives identify the market demand for their products.

Pains, Gains, and Jobs. I found this simple design thinking method a fantastic way to understand my target audience much better. I think it's important to remember that when we go out there to a new niche, whatever we think they want is a hypothesis. Our next step is then to go out there, capture their real desires, their real pains, and what they hope to achieve with our service or product, that means what job it's supposed to serve for them. Above all, by doing that, we capture the client's actual language and thinking. I would always recommend having a few dozen interviews with a very diverse group of people from your niche. You can even float ideas of what you want to offer, but it's essential to get your thinking into reality.

These are extremely important points to address once your niche is clear. But be patient with yourself. Sometimes it takes time to discover the niche that you are truly passionate about serving.

Selecting a training company is a key step in your coaching journey but most importantly the facilitator credentials and credibility. The Facilitator experience, not only in delivering and facilitating workshops but most importantly in the coaching experience and practice itself. You need to consider key points such as the facilitator seniority, number of his/her coaching hours, profile of clients they have coached , additional certifications in the field, the relevant and practical examples, the complexity of cases and situations the facilitator will expose and discuss etc. After all the information is available everywhere, the difference is in the facilitator depth and expertise.

When it comes to training, make sure of the following : 1- reputation of organisation delivering the program. Experience counts. 2- experience of facilitator vs the topic to be coached. Experience entails organizations he/she worked for, years of experience, scope of functions he/she mastered, regions and cultures he/she worked in... And others. 3- seniority of the trainees vs seniority and experience of the faculty. Certification is not always the core needed thing. Training is about sharing of experiences, best practices, exposure to challenges and the content as part of the game. It's not about a nice attractive social media ad or clip or a good communicater.

Agreed! Reputation and credentials matter, but don't forget to prioritize expanding your network. A strong network can attract new clients, foster collaboration, and spur growth. Consider how the program you choose aligns with your networking goals and offers connections that can help you and your peers flourish in your industries. My network has been instrumental in referring clients and collaborating with exceptional professionals to enhance our businesses!

This is an extremely important point to keep in mind and I agree with all that has been mentioned. Do not be taken by good marketing skills of some companies claiming to make you a coach in a week or two. Make sure the program is accredited by ICF.

When I ventured into team coaching a few years ago, I selected a program taught by recognised experts in the field - David Clutterbuck and Tammy Turner. Their depth of knowledge and pioneering experience gave a solid foundation to my practice in team coaching. Here are three tips for selecting a program: 1) Have a generous learning budget - good programs may cost more but also give you superior returns in client satisfaction and learning. 2) Practical wisdom trumps theory - learn from a recognised expert who serves wisdom beyond theory. 3) Supervision is a booster - Go for programs that offer supervision with an expert coach who can help you examine your practise closely. Choose wisely and stretch for the best program you can afford.

You really don't need to update all your marketing materials, your website, social media profiles, etc. This is just too much upfront investment in a concept that might need proof. Instead, market the new project that offers services related to the new specialization. Test the offer-market fit first. Once you understand the market traction with your new specializations and services, it will be easy to update your website.

In my case, it was shifting to a Leadership Coach & one of the main things that I did was to clean up my LinkedIn profile. This meant that I had to recast my profile and showcase what I had to offer. While I did all the logical stuff, one of the most unexpected impact was the effect it had on me. This is an identity change and one should be clear about this. From “I am a Coach & a Mentor. Sometimes, I also consult and train people & a bit of advisory” to “I am a Leadership Coach” - This is what I was telling myself and that changed a lot of things within me - my attitude, behaviour and my whole outlook

Start to feature aspects of your new specialization into your existing practice, where this is possible. Your existing clients are a great way to start, test your new pitch and ask for their feedback.

DO NOT DO THIS! Controversial? Maybe! However, when you coach for free, do you know what experience you get? You get an experience of what it’s like to coach a client who’s not paying. Some are committed, but most aren’t. And definitely not in the same way they are when they have skin in the game.

This is a dangerous idea. If you already are an established coach, you are bringing your skills, standing and experience into the new specialization. Discounting your fee discounts your contribution. Particularly in a high status field. I much prefer the barter trades equally accepted by coaching certification bodies. Coach for free, by all means, yet get something of equal value in return. Feedback, and testimonials are fine, and yet even paid clients provide those. High quality referrals, meaning thoughtful and properly made introductions are on a whole other level of value. And so is holding someone's hands whilst they go through the buyer's blues because they have never had a woman in the club, errrr boardroom before.

I have found volunteering to be a great way to develop skills. If you work for wonderful organizations that fit into your goals and vision then I would completely recommend this route

In my opinion and experience, it is best to begin with a solid foundation in a coaching niche, such as Emotional Intelligence Executive Coaching for physicians, founders, and leaders for disruptive behavior, burnout, and PTSD. Ideally, your coaching should be based on pre-and post-EQ-i-2.0 assessments, client workbooks, videos, and ancillary coaching material designed for corporations and hospital chains. Anderson & Anderson, APC is well known in Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Germany, and the U.S. Generally, the referring organizations are willing to pay $700 or more per hour for coaching provided by Licensed Mental Health Clinicians who are also well-trained coaches with demonstrated expertise in their coaching niche.

Starting with pro bono or low-fee clients is pivotal for gaining experience and confidence. While offering free services, ensure a mutually beneficial relationship by requesting honest feedback, testimonials, and referrals. Additionally, ask for reference letters and LinkedIn recommendations to enhance your professional profile and receive tangible benefits from your pro bono work.

Ask clients to let you record coaching sessions - transcribe and anonymise them and go through the transcripts with a skilled supervisor or peer supervision group - I don’t think that there is anything so valuable as slowing time down and going through the transcript coaching question by coaching question - when i do this with students (or with my own transcripts) it is So eye opening. If you have clean language interview training then you can see all of the questions that have earned themselves into your coaching and which ones are cluttering up the session with your ego, assumptions or theories - it’s the fastest way for me to improve my own practice and to feel brave and supported with my peers .

Learning is the key. Learn techniques, new softwares and tools, do research on the business. Knowing the industry jargon and business know-hows will help you touch the pain points better and provide right guidance.

This is a critical step when you are making that shift. Being part of an active coaching peer group, taking supervision regularly and continuing to self assess are key

Always be learning as a coach and a leader in your new coaching specialization. Read widely. Listen to podcasts. Join webinars. Attend events. Take classes. Consider a new coaching certification in the new area of specialization. If you have an existing coaching certification, a learning and recertification process is built into it. Use that to focus on the new area.

Lifelong learning is a must in our career! Be curious and interact with people from different environments. I strongly believe that genuine curiosity can amplify our experience. Observe people in public places, interact whenever possible, and talk to as many people as you can. Others′ stories can give us very good insights! Besides, read, listen to podcasts, and watch movies, talks, and documentaries on subjects that relate to your coachees′ matters or not. Sometimes the novelty of a subject can connect with things that we didn′t expect and help us to have good ideas. Also, taking formal courses can expand your concepts′ radar and give you new perspectives besides meeting new people which I always find interesting.

Create your present from your future, not your past! Serve your client as if you were already 3 years into coaching in this area. Yes, you’ll come up short occasionally, but you’ll go into sessions with the level of gravitas required to create effective change… and you’ll fill in the gaps quickly!

Be part of a community of coaches that provides networking and constant learning. Seek to be nourished by the experiences of colleagues who can add value with good practices and sharing challenges and how to overcome them. Find a topic related to coaching and use the community to provide insights on that topic. Learn to teach and teach to learn. Build bridges to reach more clients and expand your legacy as a coach.

There are too many coaches around. Unfortunately, there are no quality checks and no entry barriers.In such a scenario, you need to make your transition creative and authentic. It is not going to harm you if you start by saying that you are new to this field and learning.Add weight of certifications, conversations around your new specialization, and what niche you are trying to create fro yourself.

Starting something new to escape your past will mean you're only taking part of yourself into the future, you'll always have some aspect of you that is held in your past creating recurring patterns of behaviours and thinking.

All the above comments make sense, in my case, I started a post graduation in Chinese Medicine with focus in coaching using the Shiou Hsing methodology, developed by Dr. Joel Eel Jia in SP. We have studied almost 4 years between theoretical and practical work. This method connects milenar Chinese knowledge with the modern neuroscience and helps the Coachee transform his/her implicit memories that limit them, and expands their capabilities to explore all potential they have. The more I do, the more I become surprised with the results we got.
